94 tach issue

New here and thought I would start out with a question
I have a 94 that I have done an engine swap to an older HEI system. The problem I am having is that the tach does not seem to like the HEI distributor with any revs past 3000 rpms. The tach will display any random number below the 3000 mark.
Lower rpm readings work fine (and are correct), the tach does work correctly (verified with a signal generator).
Any suggestions as I would like to keep the factory tach?
