need help with timing

Maybe you guys can help me out. I have a 305 with an HEI distributor and while trying to set the timing, when I advance the dist. (turn twoards driver side) the timing mark on my balancer falls back twoards the passenger side. What could be causing this? Oh, and it's not a computer controlled dist. and the motor is carb'd. I've eliminated all the electronicsfrom the motor when I did the swap.
