  • Rear Cargo Screws

Well, I did a search and I couldn't find anything about this, so here is a little “how to” if anybody is interested-
You know those cheap a**, soft plastic screws in the rear cargo panels? Well here is an idea to replace them with something better and more durable. If you ever need to remove the rear panel to access your spare tire or do some speaker replacements, you could end up damaging these screws very easily, and then they make your panels look bad. The stock screws were another one of GM’s lousy ideas if you ask me. You may want to replace your perfect screws that haven't been damaged yet, and replace them with these. Then when you sell your car, you can, put the original ones back in if you want. You have to be careful taking those original screws out though, because they could end up like the ones in the picture. I used a key with a wide top, to remove the ones in my Camaro, and it worked well.

The stock screws cost about $5.95 each, from the dealer at retail cost. The replacement screws are made of very tough nylon, and come with a plastic threaded clip, and cost less than $2.00 for three sets. They can be purchased at Autozone, and possibly other auto parts stores.

    Go from this-

    To this-

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, remove plastic panel from the cargo area.
Next, remove old screws from panel.
Then, put plastic nut insert into the hole that is in the body of the car (Illustration 1), and take a large flat head screw driver in one hand and push in on the front side of the clip. With the other hand push down on the top of the clip. It should pop in fairly easily, but keep in mind it is supposed to be tight so that it won’t pop back out. If you are having difficulty getting the clip in, just apply some oil along the part of the clip that goes into the hole.
After all three clips are in, reposition your cargo panel and put the black nylon screws in using the same flat head screw driver (Illustration 2). A quarter works very well for this also (Illustration 3). Just use normal pressure with either.
    Your done!
