WASHINGTON (Sept. 2, 2005) — Revised Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) listings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rank more than 2,400 passenger vehicle tires for treadwear, traction and temperature resistance, according to the agency.
NHTSA noted that five tire brands—Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Cordovan and Big O—had particularly impressive treadwear ratings, while nearly 90 tire lines received the highest (AA) ratings for traction and nearly 700 got the highest (A) ratings for temperature resistance.
Nearly 50 tires—2 percent of the total—had treadwear ratings over 600, and the Michelin Hydroedge radial achieved a rating of 800
Once controversial, the UTQG ratings are now a standard, routinely updated feature at NHTSA that includes the outcome of testing performed by tire manufacturers as required under the Highway Safety Act of 1966. For the newest listings, contact www.safercar.gov/tires/pages/tireratings.cfm.
