Us old timers can recall paying a lot less than that. I remember some thing like 35 cents a gallon back in the sixties......and that was for high test.
And many of you are not old enough to remember this, but when the gas shortage of the 70's hit and prices started to escalate, almost all the pumps wouldn't allow for a price higher than 99 cents a gallon. So when it went over $1.00 a gallon almost every single gas pump in the USA (they were all mechanical back then) had to be retrofitted to add that extra digit.

I remember on the news the other day they were talking about a little town out west that had the old analog "speedometer" type pumps. It wouldn't go over $1.99, so they were advertising the gas as half price x 2. This way they could let the pumps calculate the amount of gas pumped at half the actual price, then they would just double it inside at the register.
I don't remember the exact price, but I remember it was in the .80's. Even just 10 years ago, I remember a price war between 2 stations that got the price down into the mid .70's, but it wan't really near me so I didn't take advatage of it. Heck, just a year ago I thought I was going to go broke when it hit $2.00/gal. Now I'd kill for $2.00/gal gas!

And that's exactly what OPEC wants to hear. They know we'll all be happy with $2.00/gal now, even though we were griping about it just a little over a year ago. They spike it up high in a short period of time, then bring it down to half that and we're satisfied. I know that's a bit of a conspiracy theory, and there are several other intangables, but OPEC is the source.

Ain't that the truth...sadly Finally got my car up and running yesterday, went to go get gas, put in 40 bucks...didn't even get a full tank
Let's see, my first car was a '96 escort...started driving at 16...20 now. I believe I used to pay around $1.20 or so for regular.
The cheapest I can remember in my life time was at about the age of 4 ('89/'90). I remember my dad got gas for 99 cents/gallon. How sweet would it be now to have the number for your gas read higher than what you are paying.
My dad says the cheapest he ever remembers gas was under a quarter! When he started driving in the sixties, he says he paid a quarter/gallon regularly.

I remember driving my 13:1 compression big block Challenger all the way across town to fill up with 110 leaded gas. The price was a whopping $110. Then again, I think dirt was red back then.
