  • k&n lets in more dirt?

Was reading this on a caddy forum:

    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...ad.php?t=51306

They say that they let in way too much dirt, now i always heard that they were very good at filtering. So whats up?

I am not an expert and so I have not formed an opinion on this matter yet. I run K&N on 2 out of 3 of my vehichles.

Interesting data, and not sure why they might have a bias against K&N. Let us know if you have any info on this Ken.

I had 175,000 miles on my Mustang and when I took the heads off of it, it still had the cross hatch hone and no visible wear.

I'm not convinced that you really need to catch every little piece of debris that goes into an engine. Where can it get hung up in the engine. I'm not talking a bolt here but I tiny little something. I've heard of engines passing BBs with no damage. I'm not suggesting that of coarse.

Also don't look at the chart and think man those graphs sure are different. They are only showing 4% of the entire efficiency chart. Show the entire chart and the difference is hardly noticeable. Some of the charts make me think but my past experience says not to worry about it and go with the HP gain.

Thats what i was thinking, but i wasn't going to start flaming them when i'm a newbie to caddy's. But will a little bit of dirt hurt the engine if you change the oil every 3000 miles anyway?

Shouldn't. As long as you change the filter religiously, it won't be a problem. Also, one thing I learned a long time ago, is definitely go with a good oil filter. It makes a difference.

It would seem to me to be pretty much common sense that if you're letting in more air, you're letting in more dirt. When I had my 97 Grand Prix and hung out over on the grand prix forums, it was pretty much accepted common knowledge that K&N's let in a lot of dirt. There were a lot of stories of people taking their airboxes off and having a nice film of dust and dirt inside the tubes. Of course, the GP has it's airbox right behind the driver's side headlight, more directly open to the outside air than f-bodies. People still ran the K&N's though, because it does help with airflow of course.

I wouldn't be surprised if K&N lets more dirt in. The question is, does it make a difference??? Apparently not?
