  • Just heard on the radio...

Apparently a Greyhound bus near Dallas carrying people trying to evacuate from hurrican Rita exploded earlier. They said that most likely an oxygen tank from one of the senior citizens on the bus could have possibly been a contributing factor.

Another note on this... They CLOSED that evacuation route, which is bumper to bumper already. Now the people behind this accident are going to be stuck on the roads when this hits.

They are now saying Houston and Galveston may be spared a direct hit, but it's still going to be bad enough. I guess we'll have to stay tuned...

The media keeps talking about how the fire IGNITED the oxygen tanks. I guess they don't understand that oxygen is not flammable. It will definitely heat up the already existing fire though.

That's sad that all those senior citizens died.

Oxygen may not ignite, but the tanks will explode. Fire will heat up the oxygen in those tanks putting them under extreme pressure until the tank integrity is compromised. Then you've got a sudden burst of pure oxygen feeding that fire. Wouldn't be pretty as those tanks started popping off.

Yes, I understand the catalyst function of o2 and the pressure limits of a metal gas canister. I was just pointing out that they were misrepresenting the properties of o2 by implying that it was flammable. Supposedly the brakes overheated and caught on fire. Either way, an unfortunate accident.
