  • Anyone here belong to SETI@home, or want to join the f-body.com team?

I've been a member of the SETI@home project for a couple of years and recently thought it'd be cool to start an f-body.com team and see how many members we could get to join. For those that don't know what SETI@home is, it's the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence at home. You download a small program that runs in the background, or you can configure it to run only when the computer is idle (i.e. the screensaver is running) and it downloads packets of information from radio telescopes and anylizes the info for signs of intelligent radio communication unobtrusively in the background while you're doing other work or your computer is idle. It then sends the results back to the server and downloads another packet and repeats.

The project is run by the University of Berkely and has been around for many years, so it's on the up and up, and you won't be downloading any viruses or spyware.

If you're already a member of SETI@home, just search for team "f-body.com" and join. If you're not a member and would like to join, just go here. It will automatically make you a member of team f-body.com after you've signed up. You can download this to multiple computers also, so if you have a couple of computers at home or can download it at work, etc that's all the better because the more computers we have it running on the better our team does. We get nothing for "winning" except bragging rights.

When you join it will send you an email with an account key and a URL. Save that email because in the BOINC manager you will have to click on "Attach to new project" under the "Project" tab and it will ask you for this information. If anyone needs any help running it once you've got it downloaded, just post here or shoot me a PM.

If you want to check out the site first before joining, this is the main website: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/index.php

That's the beauty of this project, if you get a whole bunch of people doing it, they can't abduct us all!!!

I don't believe that site updates automatically. It can take 24 hours for the info to appear. Keep those registrations coming!
