help with bbc

I am rebuilding my dad's 396 in my high school auto mechanics class. I am now in the process of putting it back together but I dont have any thing yet. Do any of you know where the best place to get gaskets, bearings and so forth. While we had it down he wanted a new cam. I dont really know what to get, all I know he he wants a torque cam with a fairly clean idle. A bit of lope wont matter as long as it still drives good. Just list some good cams or cam specs. Thanks.

any normal(ie not pep boys or auto zone) can get u the gaskets, i recommend Fel-Pro as i've had good luck with them. I have heard older ppl taking a LS6 cam(note LS6 from 70 chevelle ss 454 motor) and puttin it in their bbc. im sure the older guys will chime in
