  • SO PO'ed at Dealership

    Hey all,
I am test driving a 2005 GTO. I have it overnight.
While on my way back the check engine light came on. I didn't do anything that I haven't done in my Hawk.
Anyway, they keep telling me that my Hawk is worth only 14,500 for a trade in. I told them Blue Book estimates it at 19,300. My lease payoff with the pentialties is around 16500. The dealership said that they could do me a great deal and give me only 16000 for a trade in.
I am so po'ed that I want to take a baseball bat to them. Anyway, The GTO kicks a$$.

Blue book don't mean squat to a dealership. They go by what is called the blackbook. It shows what the car is worth wholesale. This makes sense, considering that they have to buy it and then sell it to a guy who is going to be standing there holding the bluebook you quoted going..."You want $23,000 for this car??? Blue book says it is worth only $19,300!!" See dude, the dealership is a business. The purpose of a business is to make money. They can't make money if they buy your car at retail value and try to sell it at above retail. No one will buy it, and they will end up taking a loss on it and be out a few grand. $16,000 is actually a pretty good deal. You may be able to squeeze another $500 or so out of 'em, but not much more. And if you did, they would find a way to make it back on the sale of the new car, so you won't really be getting much more after all. I worked for a car dealership selling Chevy's for a year and learned ALOT about how all that works. Trust me man, you aren't going to get a dealership to give you much more than they offered you. Just my $0.02

You are definitely better off selling your car through Autotrader or locally. You'll get what the wholesaler would get. You might be without a car for a few days, but it's well worth it.

What happened to the Mustang you were going to buy?

I still think you should get a used Honda.

yeah man, buying an '05 GTO is not going to help if you ahve payments to make, and everyone here mentioned to you already that they would be extremely surprised if you got 20k for the hawk. Just hold off on a sports car for now, however much you might want one, adn go with something more practical for the time until you can save some money, and then buy one when you won't have to worry so much about the money. Just be patient bro, it seems like we've been telling you this for a while but you don't seem to take heed to our advice and then come here and get angry when the other guys said you most likely were not going to ge that much for the hawk.

              Well,
I am going to wait. I mean it this time. I tried to deal with them. Then I called Ford. They saw the car and only offered 17,500.
This dealer was the best I delt with. He said to also try Carmax. Then if it is aleast a 2 grand in my pocket. My fiance said that just to do that and get a car under 10 grand. Live with it for a while.
              Like you all said.
I am just to stubbern. Oh, well I will keep dreaming.

You'll probably be better off keeping the Hawk and getting it paid off or getting a beater, as has been said. If it was me, I'd take the hit and keep the Hawk. You're at least half way done paying it off, if not more. You could always see if you can get the APR lowered or get another loan with a lower APR...or something to that effect. That might help.

If the dealer is offering you that much, they won't wholesale it. They're going to send it through the service department and fix whatever is wrong with it, probably repaint the nose and get any dents popped out, and sell it on the used car lot for a fortune. When they give you a lowball price, then they're going to wholesale it. At dealerships, it's all about buy low sell high, and if it's going to cost them too much to get it dealership ready, then it goes wholesale. Basically, if a dealership can't clear at LEAST 3 g's, they won't keep it. And they never keep anything with high miles. We had a 97 Accord come in today with 137,000 miles through service, and that's the highest miles anybody in the dealership has ever seen a car go through service to be sold as a used car before. Usually, anything over 75k, regardless of condition, goes on the wholesale line. But it's a Honda, so go figure. It will probably end up as one of those $1,995 "special sale cars too, that they'll sit on for 6 months until they get tired of seeing it.
