This is a spin-off of the Iran-Israel thread, as it started to become an Oil thread. I was thinking, if we can make synthetic motor oil. (conventional comes from crude oil, correct?) Why can't we make synthetic gasoline? Wouldn't that decrease our dependance on foreign oil? I mean if we can create a way to mass produce it, it should be less expensive because it'll have no need to be processed by the refineries? Any thoughts?

I think there's some confusion in what a "synthetic oil" is. It starts out as conventional hydrocarbon distillate, but the carbon and hydrogen atoms are rearranged into "custom" molecules that do not occur naturally in crude oil.
"Synthetic gasoline" is already made from natural gas or coal. Its been produced since Germany developed the process during WW II. To make any of these products, you need huge amounts of carbon and hydrogen...... that pretty much requires that you work with hydrocarbons found in crude oil, coal, natural gas, tar sands, oil shale, etc.Fred

Hmmm. Maybe we could make synthetic rubber from synthetic oil. Just think of the possibilities!R.i.K.
