  • Winter weather danger, everyone please read!

Wolfman has posted about this in years past, and I just thought I'd reiterate in case it hasn't been posted lately. Snow and ice are now falling across much of the country and this can pose a danger if you're driving behind tractor trailers or other large trucks. They sit at a truck stop or in their yard and collect snow and ice and once they hit highway speeds or warmer climates these can blow off in large sheets of heavy, dangerous ice chunks and could easily shatter a windshield or cause an accident if you're following too closely. Even those areas not seeing winter weather must be cautious of this threat as trucks may be travelling from an icy area and once they hit your warmer weather the ice may come lose. Once it's airborne, it's too late to do anything about it. Please leave plenty of room between you and any large truck!

Good words. I typically don't follow tractor trailers closely as they have a tendency to drop and throw rocks into the front of my car. A good rule of thumb would be to stay far away from them all of the time.

Reminds me. One day I was sitting at a light. My buddy was in the passenger seat. He looks over towards me with this funny smile on his face. I ask him what he is smiling at. He said, "Dude, it is hilarious that you have to look up to see into that Honda next to you". LOL

Also watch out for aluminum ladders in the back of pickup trucks. They have a tendency to never secure them.

I think there should be some sort of ladder registration program so they could trace it down when they loose it on the interstate.

They have a tendency not to secure a lot of things in the backs of pickup trucks. I had a two-foot metal pole shatter my windshield, almost came through it. So I tend to avoid following pickups, especially if there's anything in the bed. It doesn't take much to have somthing bounce out, especially on the freeway.

They just put new laws into effect here in Alberta stating that the only unsecured load you can carry is one that sitts lower that 6 inches from the top of the box of the pickup(tailgate must be in place). Anything else has to have a cargo net or be tied/straped down. All Semi-trucks have to sweep their decks before moving here too.

I was several car lengths behind a tractor trailer and in the lane beside it in my daily driver one time when one of it rear trailer tires blew. It was incredible, like nothing I've ever seen. It literally looked like a bomb went off in the back of the truck. One second we're driving along, the next second there was a huge explosion at the back of the truck with sparks and smoke. Next thing I know huge chunks of rubber are flying back at me, luckily I only got hit with one smallish piece on the A-pillar. Left a good scuff mark on the paint, luckily it missed the windshield by inches. As soon as I saw the explosion I had veered off onto the shoulder away from the truck because I didn't even realize it was a tire, the explosion was that big and violent. Luckily that probably saved me from getting hit by more rubber.

Definately good advice to stay away from them at all times.
