  • Tire ? for Ken C

    Ken,
During my down time I tend to think of dumb things and this question flashed through my feable mind. Does tire wear increase on average with warmer road/air temperatures than cold? If so, is it significant?

I'm not Ken (thank goodness ) but I'm going to take a guess that there's more wear during warmer weather because the tire is softer and grippier. I doubt the difference is major though. Am I right, Ken?

I'm going to guess you're correct as that is what I always believed. Just one question though.... Grippier? Is that really a word? If not, it should be.

if they are properly inflated, then the slightly increase in wear in warm ambients is just that, slightly....however, there are some new tread rubber compounds now being used whereas extreme cold sets up a chemical reaction to make the tread rubber softer for better grip on ice with the newer winter tires... this tire runs hard in the summer...traction on warm days is pretty cheesy..

ill tell you what spikes the increase in tread wear, espeically in your area of the country and moreso in the South West.... thats rainy days... yup...rainy days... why? because the majority of the roads down there are paved using a high sea shell content... this surface fills up with sand and blowing fine debrit....to make it a pretty good surface for tire wear, untill it rains.....on wet days, the water washes all that out of the surface, and what you end up with is trillions of tiny razor blades sticking up....

I've never quite understood why people address one person by making a post instead of sending a PM.

              Can someone enlighten me?

No offense intended. I'm just curious.

thats the way i always looked at it too......... so that others can maybe benefit from something they never thought of, or have thought of but never bothered to ask or do research.

I thought of that too but why not address everyone. Everyone's going to see the thread anyways and whoever has knowledge will respond. I feel like I shouldn't respond if it is addressed to others, even though I feel I have a good and educational response.

It's no big deal, I just wondered. I've always addressed people on PM if I think I'm just going to ask that person a question.
