around a year ago last summer, my wife Mary was contacted by the Intake cooridinator of GRREAT (Mary is now the Intake Cooridinator) www.grreat.org, she had recieved a call from a young man who is in Fredericksburg VA, which is 15 miles south of us, his 12 year old golden retriever had been stolen...he was asking for help...
well, it turned out, he was from South Dakota, he was in his late 20's...and had left home due to an abusive father... he was homeless. He had transportation, and was working at a Bookstore to try and raise enough money to get an apt. that allowed dogs.....he and his dog were very bonded. Tosh was all he had in the world besides a few clothes and his car, an old but in good mechanical shape, toyota celica. During the day, while he worked, Tosh was on an 18 foot rope tied to the cars wheel, which the car was parked where Mario could see it from the bookstore..there was grass, always a bowl of water, and food for Tosh..and trees for shade....
One day...he saw two women in their late 30's or so hanging around Tosh.. acting nervous... he asked the manager of the Bookstore if he could go check on Tosh..and he did....by the time he got there....they had untied the rope.....Mario screemed "what are you doing"...."thats my dog"..the women sad "its not right he's tied up out here..... Mario got the rope retied and told them he's going to call the police.......they left (fk nosey bitches.......)
Well.....Tosh was gone......Mario went to look out the front window of the store which he had done an hour earlier....and he was gone... he did remember that someone came in and acted unusually friendly to him, kept him busy and away from the window.
to make a long story short...Mary...recruited me....and we went to the bookstore and started our own investigation..... the women in question must have got nervous, cause they took Tosh to the county shelter, said they found him on the road...well.....they didnt know that Mary had already alerted the county shelters around our area...so the shelter called mary right away..and Mario got Tosh back...GRREAT paid the 50 dollar fee to the shelter...
Mario called two weeks ago.....first time we had heard from him since back then...he got a temp job in New Orleans to make some "big bucks" and wanted to know if there was anyone that could watch Tosh for him...he's current living in a home with 4 other guys thats funded by the county..the people are screened well...the are folks that are just having a hard go of things... Mario also has a slight mental illness for which he tries to stay on medication for.....bad depression..thanks to his rotten dad...
Mary got in touch with one of her friends who also operates an all breed rescue...and Jannette agreed to watch Tosh for Mario. Well, Mary and Jennnete got this idea......and they started a fund raiser for Mario and Tosh for Christmas......
gotta tell ya folks....i'm blown away...... they contacted all the rescues they work with all over the U.S........ and so far, they have gotten $2,200.00 in donations.....and everyday...the UPS truck drops off boxes of clothes, used and new! Marios size...I met the guy...so i pretty much could tell what sizes he needed.
Vets donnated enough thyroid medication for Tosh (he's on it) to last over a year.....
He'll be back in 3 days...... Mary and Jennette asked me to take off and go with em..this Friday......i think Mario is gonna remember this Christmas.....
We are going to feed the money to him in 4 parts, all visa cards..., first, so nobody in the home robs him, and second, so he does'nt foolishly blow it all on something without realizing what hes' done......
I'm very proud of my wife for what she's done for this poor guy and his dog, which he loves so much, he'd feed the dog before himself.....
Christmas.........thats what its all about..and Kudo's to all those folks they know that made donations, many people send 100 bucks or more!
