Moving back to Texas....

I am going to finally be moving back to Texas at the end of this month. It sucks, though, cause I will have to leave my wife here in Canada for a few months until we can get her immigration stuff finished. I will move back in with my parents until I can get a job and find an apartment. I have a test with Frisco Police Department on the 28th ( My dream job ) so...wish me luck! I would also appreciate it if you guys would remember my wife and me in your prayers, cause it is going to be hard being apart for that long. Anyway, just wanted to share the news. I will be driving down (1500 miles) with a buddy of mine who is flying up so that I won't have to do it alone. Should be quite the road trip!!

I'll say congrats, because I know you've been looking forward to getting back to Texas. It sucks that you'll be away from your wife for so long, I know that'll be tough. I bet it'll be quite a culture shock for her if she's a born and bred Canadian. Heck, Texas would be a culture shock for me! Good luck on the police test. If you need any tips let me know, I've been through a few police entrance exams in my day (and passed them all, too )

for whats it worth, mary and convoyed from VA to Seattle Wash. in our 76 vett and 84 TA......from there, we drove to TX a year later in the same cars......from TX...5 years later, we drove back to VA in a 87 Ta with me in a PU and my Yamaha fj1200 in the back......

let me tell ya...these kind of road trips can be alot of fun. you only live once, enjoy it!!! now..if you run into probs with getting the wife in, email me private broh....ive been with Uncle Sam for 30 years....I have a lot of contacts we can call and try and straighten things out.

Every written test I've ever taken consisted of some basic math questions (if 5 tv and 3 vcr's are stolen and each tv cost 245.87 and each vcr cost 126.32 what was the total stolen type questions) and reading comprehension. Not unlike an easy SAT. Some tests had situational questions or personality questions. They compare your answer to how actual police officers answer the questions.

Overall the written tests are very easy if you're somewhat intelligent and don't have a problem with simple math (addition, subtraction, multiplication).

For oral exams, I've only been through one for the State Police. There was a panel of 2 people. A civilian state employee and a state trooper. They asked 3 questions about yourself (what are your strengths, what are your weaknesses, and another I don't remember). They then asked 8 situational questions that you were to aanswer as if you were NOT a cop. Just you as you are now. They were questions like "you accidentally cut someone off in traffic and now they tailgating you, flashing their lights and honking. What would you do?" Or "you're at a grocery store in the checkout line and see your neighbor stealing something from the store. What would you do?"

As long as your answers aren't way out there ("kill him and eat the body") they aren't really looking at your answers so much as your support for your answers. Why would you do what you did? They want you to support your answers. They'll also look at your body language and how, physically, you answer. Are you fidgety? Do you say "umm" a lot?

If you're cool calm and collected (they expect that you'll be a little nervous) and give clear concise answers that are well supported by rationale you'll do fine. Of course, every department approaches it differently, that's how PSP did theirs.

Written tests are knowledge based but do not require you to know police procedures or be a criminal justice major to do well on them.. It's a common knowledge type test. Physical tests are department specific, they'll tell you ahead of time what you'll have to do for that.
