On Sunday the 8th, I found my male GSD dead in my backyard. I left my house at 10:30am and arrived back at the house at 6:30pm. Kodiak was an extremely healthy year and half old dog, and he was just at the vet a week prior. The night was pretty bad since it was dark and I had to take care of my son. Latter that night, my eight month old female GSD started vomiting. At this point I was pretty upset because I thought somebody poisoned them. I brought her to the vet at 7:00am for tests, etc. That morning I went through my back yard to see if I could find anything. The only thing I found were some pieces of shredded landscape fabric...both dogs managed to dig up some out of a rock garden. I brought a piece of it to the vet. and he confirmed that this was probably the cause and it made sense with the results of the tests he ran. He mentioned that Kodiak probably got a piece of it stuck in his intestine and that it quickly caused blood poisoning. After the antibiotics and intestinal medication, Amber is fine now. It is a real bummer because Kodiak is the one I was close to, and Amber is freaked out because Kodiak raised her.
This was truly awful. I thought I did a pretty good job of dog proofing my yard. I fenced off all access to my car port, pulled up all of the metal lawn edging, fenced off my wood pile because Kodiak cut his mouth chewing on some of the hard wood, and removed anything I thought would hurt them. Kodiak had a problem with eating small pebbles and rocks when he was a puppy so I spent three weekends, five hours each day, using my shop vac to remove all pebbles and small rocks from my backyard. However, I never thought of this.
