I am trying to install a CD that I have to use for my one class and my computer isn't letting me. I tried to install something else to see if it is my computer or the CD and it won't let me install anything else. The error message I get is " The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose Close to terminate the application". Any ideas?

Sounds like you must be running windows 2000 or XP and the program you are running is either 16bit MSDOS based (which wont work in XP or 2000) or the installer for the program is. Read the software minimum requirements to make sure you meet or pass them. If you want to get it to work in windows XP you can try the compatibility mode which is accesed by finding the file you want to run, then right clicking it and go into proprties. Then select compatibility at the top (its a Tab) Then select either windows 98 or MSDOS. This may work and it may not.

Probably not the case, but does the software require .Net framework? Although the error message is different, one way to tell is that you cannot run the application at all. I've normally only seen that error on Windows 2000 machines, because it normally involves a problem with the Windows 2000 virtual DOS machine. But like DeWynter mentioned, it could be a DOS or 16 bit application attempting to install on a XP machine.Originally posted by 94 formula
The majority of the software out there is forward compatible, and will auto select the appropriate OS for compatibility and installation purposes, but it gets tricky with true DOS applications.
One more possibility is that your CD-ROM driver may have been corrupted or you have a corruption with your . Look in your Device Manager to look at the current status of the CD-ROM drive that you are attempting to use. You may need to re-install or update the existing driver.Comment
