  • best alarm against vandalism?

Hey guys, what's the best car alarm against vandalism? (if there is one?) I'm not too worried about theft, but more of someone messing up the car (again).

And what would happen with a car cover blown by the wind at night on a sensitive alarm?

    Thanks in advance

I've got the Viper 791 on the Z and have been pretty happy with it. The shock sensor is pretty sensitive, but I've never had problems with it when the cover was on in the wind. Plus the remote pager is quite nice. And, since yours in an auto, you can use the nifty remote-start without worry . I can set you up with the guy that installed mine if you're interested.

I would recommend getting one that can page you in the event it is triggered.

You can also mount a switch on the fuel door, so if anyone opens it the alarm will trigger. - or get a locking fuel cap, or both.

I cant imagine what a nightmare it must be to have to park your car in public.

locking gas caps or an alarm on the cap would be a really good idea, I hear more and more stuff about people stealing gas becuase it is getting so expensive.

I have a Viper alarm too (non paging) and I can change the sensitivity of the alarm also. I work in an industrial area and I have the sensitivity low because trucks could set it off do to the vibration they cause.

The installer had his car rigged up nice (before the cops told him to change it) he had it so when the alarm was activated it would send a live current to the door handles in addition to the alarms standard features. It was aparently varry easy to do.

If someone keys your car or slashes a tire, even if you have the best pager and alarm there is little you can do unless you or someone else catches them in the act. Maybe a servalence camera would be a good idea.

                    Thanks guys for your advice.

Hey FireFinder, can I borrow that cat? Looks meaner than a pit bull!

Or maybe that flame thrower car can come in handy. I would sure love to try that out!! But with #$@% shady lawyers, I almost know that some car jacker who gets burned will somehow get a million bucks from some kind of lawsuit. Totally ridiculous.

And I already have a locking gas cap. Learned the hard way

I'll take a good look at the Viper alarms. They look to be the best.

One last question. Does anyone know of a car cover that locks in multiple positions? Meaning, you cannot expose the body of the car without having a key?

The only car covers I know about are thin and are ment to protect a car from the elements not like crazzy people with keys.

Where are you parking your car where you need this kind of protection it seems extreme. I use to live downtown in my city got an alarm and a club and I was good to go. My car did eat a shingle once that fell off of a house and local kids used it as a frizbiee (didnt catch them assumed after finding the shingle and the damage). But even a car cover wouldnt have totaly protected my car vs that (it would have been less though).

If your storing it for a long time it may be a good way to go. If not you may actuly be drawing more attention to your car then it would be normaly. Its the box with a lock theroy, you can have a box sitting in your yard and no one looks at it, put a lock on it and people want to know whats in it. You may need something custom if you want to do this though.

Craig, most of the locking covers have a cable that runs around the bottom of the cover. You pull the cable and cover tight and then lock it. But, if some punk wanted to vandalize your car, they would just have to pull out their pocket knife and cut open the cover itself.

I think a little microswitch inside the gas cap is a pretty good idea. Thing that sucks, is nowadays, some kids just don't even get scared even if the alarm is going off.

Canadian Formula, I know what I'm looking for is "overkill" and the odds of my car getting vandalized again may be rare. And it's parked right in front of my house, and the neighborhood isn't bad. It is however, close to a #@$# nasty high school where you get punk kids wanting to destroy stuff. It was vandalized right in front of my house and 1 bottle of syrup and spray paint + no noise = $4000+ in damage. I don't want to go through that again.

You guys are right though...I forgot that the car cover itself is easily tearable. That was an obvious thing I overlooked

Kev, is there any kind of alarm system that we know for sure would scare them away? Other means of electricution, etc? I think a noise alarm would be sufficient since I can hear it from the house. But if there's an alternative, I'd definitely be willing to try it.
I already having a locking car cover with the lock below the car. It has helped under high winds, but you're right...it's not for security...just for keeping it from blowing completely off.

Since your in residential setting I would just get a good alarm with the sensitivity way up, you can always go back to the shop where you got it installed and they can make it less sensitive.

I thought the shingle was bad, spray painting a car is just messed up. worse then keying a car. I would realy think about having a video camera in your house pointed outside, that way even if kids sit on it or anything you can take it to there school and complain.

There may also be bylaw stuff where your putting a car cover on a car parked on a city street, you may get a ticket. Doing something extream may make you more of a target, I was just trying to help out.
