  • Interesting speed limit video

I'da been fuming back there, but they do make an excellent point.

I'd just hate for somebody stuck in that mess that needs help and can't get around them idiots. Woman having a baby, somebody bleeding badly, a doctor that got called in for an emergency, or anything like that.

They did that crap on I285 just a couple of miles from my house. That bridge they are filming off of is East Ponce De Leon Ave over I285. I tell you they are lucky someone didn't shoot them. It's a wonder someone didn't put a bumper on them. I'm glad I wasn't there. They were definitely in sighting road rage. Morons.

BTW the average speed on that road is about 70. Cops do it too.

Yes, that's their point. Everybody does it all day, and it's like the norm, but whenever they feel like it, or need to issue a ticket, they'll bust someone. It's basically just saying rules were meant to be broken and work against us.

That may be true but the most dangerous thing is to have everybody going 70 and run up on a person doing 55.

State Farm did a study a few years ago and their findings were that it wasn't speed that cost most accidents, it was speed differential. It was someone coming up on a slower car. Germany has much higher speeds on the Audubon yet they have fewer accidents. You know why? Because they will ticket you for not passing someone while in the left lane. It is strictly enforced too. If they would do that here in the states the accident rate and the road rage incidents would drop dramatically.

BTW With the 6spd it is impossible to drive 55. When you come to a hill the cruise control will take the accelerator to the floor trying to keep it at 55. Not enough RPMs. 55 is a joke with today's cars. It is a revenue generator that's it.

I LOVE that video. It illustrates everything I hate about low speed limits and slow drivers. Impeding traffic? Check. Insighting road rage? Check. Causing traffic backups? Check.

I want the "motherly" highway safety board to counter that. Common sense is their enemy.

Speaking of traffic backups - the quicker a car can travel on a road, the quicker it can exit the road, resulting in one fewer car on the road to contribute to traffic congestion. This is why traffic backups continue to build upon themselves during rush hour. If freeways everywhere were capable of handling 90+ mph (I realize they aren't) it would definitely ease traffic congestion.

But technically, the speed limit does the same thing. For private citizens, the speed limit is the speed limit ... if you aren't in a police car, or ambulance, you can't break the speed limit no matter what your "situation" is. This video also illustrates the trouble this could cause. (I realize no cop would ever write a ticket for a husband hustling his wife-in-labor to the hospital, he would probably give some sort of escort, but that's not the point).

God, I love this video. What a perfect illustration of un-naturally low speed limits.

Well, there's a story for everything - only this was a doctor, not a husband. My uncle's a doctor who works in a hospital. One of the other on-call doctors was speeding to the hospital to help deliver a baby. The officer pulled him over, then ended up escorting him to the hospital. He then waited for him to finish, no BS, then wrote him up. He lives near Columbus OH.

Technically, at least if they had been in PA, they were still breaking the law by being in the left lanes and not passing.

Hrrmmm...rolling road block, ILLEGAL...failure to pass in a passing lane, ILLEGAL. In this area 55mph means NOTHING, if your not doing 70-80mph you WILL get ran off the road. I have cops PASS me while I am doing 80mph in a 65mph zone, on a regular basis...and think NOTHING of it. Frankly, I think 'most' of today's officers are watching for those dangerous/aggressive drivers versus those who are just maintaing the 'flow' of traffic. Having said that, it also depends what vehicle I'm traveling in while doing 80mph. In my Jeep, they completely ignore me, in my Formula or Ram I get a LOT more police 'attention'...(shrug)

I agree with the rest of you guys, 55mph limit is rediculous in this day and age and does nothing but induce revenue for the states.

Well me and my buddy got pulled over in ohio a few weeks ago going 80 in a 60. We were cruising like everyone else, and got busted and written up for every last MPH over. No break whatsoever.

But I think Ohio high patrol prey on MI drivers. We're their money maker.

You're right. My uncle has lots of stories about OH highway patrol...although he isn't necessarily the most obedient to the speed limit.
Also, last time I was there, my dad and I were driving at 2 am on a deserted road. We had just been rerouted on 3 different flights, and 1 luggage was lost. We picked up the rental. The limit was 55 and we were going about 65. Sure enough, one of them was hiding as a speed trap and wrote us up for 66. Wasn't too thrilled about that.

Cops love out of state drivers, because they'll never come back to fight the ticket in court. It's easy revenue. On the other hand, that could very well explain why every Ohio driver I see on the road here in PA drives like a granny.
