    From the Cleveland Plain Dealer...

New GTO coming around the bend,Wednesday, March 01, 2006
Joshua Dowling, Special to The Plain Dealer

Geneva, Switzerland- The Pontiac GTO isn't dead after all, says a top General Motors Corp. executive, who also hinted there might be a new ultra-fast Corvette coming. The current GTO will be phased out at the end of this year, but an all-new model is expected to return at the end of 2008 as a 2009 model, said Bob Lutz, who heads GM's global vehicle development.

In an interview at the international auto show in Geneva, Switzerland, Lutz also suggested an even more powerful version of the Corvette might be on the way. Industry insiders have talked about a "Blue Devil" Corvette that would be more powerful than the 505-horsepower Z06 that is currently the fastest Corvette. Lutz stopped short of confirming that, saying: "There will be something special for the Corvette soon." When "Blue Devil" was mentioned, he simply smiled.

The GTO, however, is definitely on the way. Last year, it appeared that GM had canceled any future GTOs as part of its efforts to reduce costs. And a Pontiac spokesman confirmed this year that the last GTOs would be sold this summer because the model wouldn't meet a new airbag standard taking effect in the fall. The spokesman said that the automaker would like to have another GTO but that there was nothing to announce.

But in the interview Tuesday, Lutz said the GTO plans were just off the shelf for a few months and he always wanted a new version. The new GTO might be built in North America, particularly if the Chevrolet Camaro concept gets the go-ahead for production, he said. Both the Pontiac GTO and Camaro could be based on GM's Zeta mechanical underpinnings, which are being developed by the company's Australian outpost, Holden, Lutz said.

With the current strength of the Australian dollar and the recent free-trade agreement between Australia and the United States, it would be more feasible to build the GTO in North America and export a version called the Holden Monaro to Australia, he said. The GTO, which is based on the Monaro, has been built in Australia and shipped to America.

I could definately see a retro themed GTO being a big seller along side the Challenger and Camaro.

One has to wonder though, how much faster and more powerful can they make the Corvette before it's just an all out race car. It would definately be in the exotic car category as far as performance and price goes if the Blue Devil gets the go ahead. I'm thinking north of $100k. Probably with some forced induction. I don't remember what the mags said about the car.

It's already as fast as most exotics.

I'd be willing to bet the new GTO shares its platform with the new Camaro.

                I think that's a no brainer. They're both RWD V8 cars in a 2+2 config. They'll likely be the next "F-body's".

Both the Camaro and Firebird names have had a somewhat redneck stigma attached to them through history. Maybe they are trying to create a more refined sophisticated image on the Pontiac side?

I once went to a BNL concert and the band was pretending to be all redneck and guess what kind of car they were joking around about driving?

"Hey baby, want a ride in my Trans Am? I've got the T-tops off!!"

I know it was just a joke, but he even put emphasis on the name Trans Am and said it like a redneck to make the point. Tami elbowed me in the side and giggled at me for being the steroetypical redneck based on what was said.

Cool! I can't wait to see what the new GTO will look like. Also glad to see that they will proabably be built here (hopefully the US or Canada) instead of overseas.

The Camaro is going to go into production, thats a given, and it will probably be 07' . Because the GTO has been out, the platform is already there, the Zeta platform I believe it's called in Australia. The platform is GM's "RWD-small-block V8" platform that I know the Camaro and GTO will share. Other cheifs like the V8 Bonneville and Grand Prix will probably remain FWD for years to come, atleast as long as the GTO is on the table. After this much hype has been made about the future Camaro its bound for production soon. GM will need a pony car to compete with (of course) the Mustangs and soon-to-be Challengers. The Challengers are going to compete in a mixed arena because of it's bang for buck. It will be somewhere between the Camaro and GTO. I think the GTO's main competitor is the Charger currently though. Another way that you can predict the Camaro is coming soon is that if GM is gonna save some pocket change by dropping the GTO it will have to have a coupe on the market to have any chance against Ford and Dodge. The Corvette is going to become an absolute joke, as if it isn't already. The only guys that will be able to drive them will be 57 years olds making 125K annually on retirement alone. Last time I read anything on the 'Blue-Devil' it was gonna limited production and boasts ATLEAST 600+HP. However, I think it's gonna be a reasonable......80K-85K........for a Corvette.....

The news right now is that the new vette will be upwards of 600HP with forced induction. That should give the Camaro some good breathing room for it's top model.

In other news Roush will be working on it's version of Camaro.

I'm sure the new GTO will be MUCH more differentiated from the Camaro than the Firebird ever was. This is only a guess, but I'd bet it rides on the longer wheelbase version of Zeta with superb performance but also with more luxury and comfort than Camaro.
