  • Why our country is in dire straights....

No, this is not a political thread....

A blurb in today's paper reads (all emphasis added is mine):

"Americans apparently know more about "The Simpsons" than they do about the First Amendment.
Only one in four Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms garaunteed by the First Amendment (freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition for redress of grievances). More than half can name at least two members of the cartoon family, according to a survey.
The study by the new McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum found that 22 percent of Americans could name all five Simpson family members, compared with just 1 in 1,000 people who could name all five First Amendment freedoms.
The survey found more people could name the three "American Idol" judges than could identify three First Amendment rights. They were also more likely to remember advertising slogans.
It also showed that people misidentified First Amendment rights. About one in five people thought the right to own a pet was protected.
The telephone survey of 1,000 adults was conducted Jan. 20-22 by the research firm Synovate and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points"
wow... there's just so much there that is so wrong. It sounds so scary, yet somehow I'm not all that surprised.

I don't put too much faith into these surveys. Usually there is a political motive involved. I would be curious to know what questions were asked and how they were asked.

I remember that Jay Leno went out "J-Walking" one night with a petition to END women's sufferage. Every single woman he ran into was more than happy to sign it.

Someone on the radio was talking about that yesterday on the radio. It was either Boortz or O'Reilly I can't remember. But they had an interesting point of view to it. They said that they were wondering if so many people were flocking to the dumb TV shows trying to escape the reality of how screwed up the world is today. I have to admit that I have done the same thing in a computer game.

Nah, that was the man show. It was so awesome. Only ONE woman got it, and she blew it open while another woman was signing. It was hilarious. Man I miss that show. It was great with kimmel and corolla.

This isn't at all surprising. However, the way we are force-fed trendy shows and things through the media, I would be way more shocked if it were the other way around. The media doesn't exactly show our First Amendment freedoms, while they are more than willing to throw American Idol all over the place.

These surveys are trying to make the American public look silly as a whole. I guarantee they took this survey outside of malls and schools. Doubtful it was done in a place loaded with your average working adult.

It was a telephone survey. If the testing agency followed standard testing procedures, it would have been very random.

Hmmm...and if you conducted the survey, say, 80 years ago, what would the results be???

I don't know, but I wonder if they'd be much different from today. The results don't look good, but if you put them in context, I don't think it's as bad as they're made out to be. I mean, how many people have to reference the 1st amendment in their every day lives. It's only natural I think.

The court decision said he won fair and square. Every recount said he won. Do you remember the media going down there and doing their own recount? Their recount showed he won so they buried the story of it. The medias #1 rule is if the story helps Bush, burry it, if it hurts Bush promote it.

BTW The vote spread was narrower in Arizona than Florida. I didn't hear anything by the media about this. Do you know why? It's because if the vote had gone the other way it would not have changed the election.

Survey companies like these are usually third parties. I be curious to know who hired them to do the survey?

Here's something to ponder...................If the results weren't predictable ahead of time, would they even bother to do the survey????????

The answer to that question will be part of the next mindless survey that we will get all worked up about for no special reason.
