  • Question for the IT people.

We are moving into our new home soon. Come to find out the old owner of the home had two T1's installed. Anybody have a clue why a resisdence would need that kind of bandwith? thanks...

I might be able to answer this one. My Cousin lives in suburban Georgia, and he has one T3 line installed. He does consulting for SAP systems, and has two servers in his home that are online with his clients at all times. He gets very heavy traffic during the daytime hours, and a T3 line was the only one that would handle it.

It could possibly be a situation like that. The previous owner probably worked from home, and may have had a couple servers running.

I agree with what was posted above, they must of had a server on site. Likely a home business, or they were a consultant / contractor.

It is possible they ran their own business doing webhosting or something similar.

They could also just have been geeks

My friend is running a server, 2 desktop computers, a laptop and a homemade pvr, not to mention the game consols or other electronics in his 2 bedroom apt

Does he have a valid need for it? No but thats what he likes. It's good for me because I usully buy his old 6month-1 year outdated top of the line tech fairly cheep so he can get the next best thing.

I use to MUD alot (NERD ALERT! NERD ALERT!) and I knew a ton of people with t1 lines in there homes for no good reason, they just wanted quicker internet speeds.

A T1 line is not really that fast anymore, its only 1.5mb up and down. Two lines would net you only 3 mb up and down total BW. My guess would be that they had servers running on one or two servers running each on a line. Could have been a P*#n site . Thats how alot of them work, home based.

I love the Envoys as well. Great trucks, especially when compared to the Exploder.

Thanks for the answers. It's not my area of expertise. It must have been a home business.. Come to find out they had a Natural gas generator installed too. Kicks in when the grid is down.

They left these blue box like things. Their is four of them. They plug into a wall socket and have several plugs built into the box. They sure are heavy and have a connection on the side that looks like you can connect a computer to it. Any clue what they are? To me they look like fancy surge protectors.

If there is a name or a number on them you can do a search to find out exactly what they are. A natrual gas generator seems freaky heavy duty who knows what was done there, could even be spammers (they send out mass amounts of email junk mail and get money for doing it).

I think it sounds cool though, maybe you can sell them if there good?

sounds like the 2 boxes you are talking about could be network hubs ?
