  • A look into the DSM world...

Just wanted to share this.. Not many people really know what these cars are cabable of. This is a local guy's 91 Eagle Talon AWD.

Just dynoed it, and here is what he had to say:

"Well I decided to take the car to the dyno one last time with the stock block in it. I went back to F1 Dyno, thanks again to Dave M, Dave and Adam, they are a great bunch of guys. The plan was to dyno at the same boost level that I ran the car at all of last year ( 32 psi ). Unfortunately, after two pulls we had to shut it down. F1 is located in an Industrial Park and their next door neighbor has a couple of offices. The guy came over and complained about the smoke and noise. They don't usually dyno in the middle of the day, nor the winter. So he was not happy. Here is the best pull :

    585 AWD HP
    450 Ft. Lbs. Torque

This was at 32 psi according to the AEM log. I was going to turn up the boost and make one more run, shooting for 600. But that is when they told me I had to shut it down due to the neighbor complaining. I am finally retiring this motor, so this was the last time out. I did not want to go nuts and blow it up, due to possible damage to other parts. Now it's time for the race motor and some serious boost.

This is the stock, original shortblock. I removed the balance shafts a few years ago, other then that, all original. It has 98k miles and at least 600 drag runs over the years."

585hp and 32psi on the stock block.. Only internal difference is cams!!

His previous best (with only 560hp) was 10.60 @ 133.35

I respect DSM's, but let me share a quote with you from a guy who has owned several here locally. This quote is also shared by every other DSM owner I have ever met.

"If you lose to a DSM, race him 2 more times. 1 out of every 3 races, a DSM will break something."

I used to think he was just joking around, but his words were correct. At one time there were 5 of them running at the local track, and 4 of them ran almost identical numbers and had almost identical mods. Now obviously, this guy was significantly faster than them, by 0.8 or more. But every week somebody new would win the final, because at least 2 of the cars would break SOMETHING every week. So while they are fast, and can be made stupid fast, they do go through a lot of parts for some reason. Personally, I'll take something slower that runs the same number all the time.

Nice potential, but the guy must have a Magic Genie waiving his magical hand over the thing to keep a stock mitsubishi together with that kind of abuse. As a matter of fact, I just don't buy it. I'm not calling anyone out, It's just I've had enough dealings with Mitsu to know that they are a hand grenade to go off. I have a feeling it is a worked on stock block with block filler and such and everything else is forged. I'll even bet the head gasket setup is o-ringed. That stock headgasket is not going to hold 32 psi even with good fuel. He has definately beat the odds.

Nope, I know for a fact it's a stock block. You're right about the head gasket, it's a metal head gasket. Everything else is stock. It's not un-heard of. It's a very high flowing motor with a great design on the head.

My block is stock, with a metal HG, and 272 cams, and I'm running 22psi daily. If I had more fuel flow I could do more.

The 4G63 is a pretty bullet proof engine.

MN6WS6 - I drove my car which has 185k miles on it (stock tranny) to lebanon raceway (105 miles away).. I did 7 runs launching at 5000rpms and 23psi, broke into the 12's, and drove my car home without a hitch. So, your theory is flawed

Those numbers are believe using a stock 6 bolt and the stock "big" rods. What turbo was used for those numbers? Have you seen buschur's black EVO video on streetfire.net That thing is sick..

It's funny that FP turbo cost about what my big 16G cost years ago. FP makes some great turbos.

OK...... so balance shafts removed, metal headgasket, likely ARP head studs and full bolt ons.

I still say it's a time bomb. Great power, impressive, loads of fun, the list goes on and on. If It were mine, every time I hit the throttle I would be holding my breath just for it to explode. Perhaps that's why I learned to run motors at far less than their potential to avoid any more catastophic failures.

It would still be a fun car if it weren't mine. As you can tell, Mitsubishi is on my ^&*( list.

heh, believe me.. I hate Mitts as well.. I would NEVER buy a truck or car from them - BUT, the evos, and the DSM's are the exception. Every other car/truck they make is pure crap in my book. My dad had an old Montero he bought new and in the 4 or 5 years he had it he put in 2 engines and 3 trannies.. yeah, mitsu sucks.
