  • scammers over the phone

I just got a call at 9:30 pm from a scammer. Never had a scam call from a scammer before, only email. Caller ID showed

    1-999-999-1234
Here's a shortened version of the conversation:

Him: (with accent) "Is this Mr. ...."

    Me: "Speaking"

Him: "I'm imforming you that you have been selected for a government grant of $5000 that you never have to pay back. Are you a tax payer?"

    Me: "Ummm....ok.

    Him: "Does that mean yes?"

    Me: "Ummm...sure."

Him: "Do you have any questions?"

    Me: "No."

Him: "My company name is (unintelligible) in Lake Forest, CA area code 9****. I can deposit your government grant into your bank account, Visa or Mastercard."

    Me: "Ummm....OK"

Him: "Do you have a Visa credit card?"

    Me: "No."

Him: "OK, that's ok. Do you have a Mastercard?"

    Me: "No."

Him: "Well, do you have a checking account?"

    Me: "No."

Him: "Ummm, can I speak with your parents?"

Me: "I live on my own. I pay everything in cash."

    Him: "Are you over 18?"

    Me: "Yes"

Him: "Can you give me your parent's number?"

Me: "No. I don't live with them. Send me a live check."

    [Hangs up]

Is there any way I can report this? I know some ignorant fool will fall for this

Did some research, found out it's going on all over the U.S. Don't know how they got my name and number though. My resume is posted on hotjobs.com, monster.com and careerbuilder.com, so I guess that's one way.
My thought process (it was obvious even after strike 1):
Strike 1: Caller ID shows 1-999-999-1234
Strike 2: Calling at 9:30 pm
Strike 3: Heavy accent person claiming to work for Uncle Sam.

    People are lame

I received a similar call the other afternoon, but the number that showed up on my cell was 000-000-0000. I was like WTF, but I answered it anyway thinking it may be an important call and I get a guy claiming the IRS owed me money and wanted to know where he could deposit it. ......... CLICK!

LOL guys. That would be pretty funny.

I just played along a bit because I thought it was pretty funny. However, I've read if you get these guys angry by accusing them of fraud or cuss them out, they will harrass you. They'll call in the middle of the night, all day, etc. and cuss you out back. That only happened to some people and I've read they had to change their number. I wouldn't like that. If there was only a way to get 'em.

I usually tell them that I have no CC's and no banks accounts and they are about to repop my house. All you hear is a click then.

I've been hit on my cell phone, but never at my home phone number.

The person who tried scamming me on my cell was dumber than a bag of hammers. She called to let me know the Visa card I applied for was approved (I already have a card, never applied for another ). She then stated that I need to give her my checking account number and routing number so she could deposit a... get this... FREE cash advance into my account just for applying.

I asked her when I applied for it. She said "November" (mind you, this all happened last May). I said "Wow. Takes a while to get approved, huh?" She said "Yeah. So many people want in on this free cash advance that it takes months". Then I said "How did you get my cell number"? She said "This is the one you gave us when you applied back in November". I said "Interesting... Because this cell phone and phone number are both brand new. I changed carriers in March".

lol i think it's hilarious how you guys mess with them. Its good to make them sweat a little bit before they call the next victim, hopefully these people will get nailed sometime.
