This time, it's the local media... as well as the local government.
I'm sure most of you have heard about the hip-hop artist, and Eminem's friend, "Proof" being shot outside a Detroit nightclub a week or so ago.
The story is all over the news here, they're treating him like somesort of hero - an ambassador of his music to the city and the country. To me, he's nothing more than another thuggish hip-hop artisit whose lifestyle finally caught up with him.
Don't get me wrong - I understand some publicity over a public figure's death, and I understand the mourning and support that his family is going through at the funeral. I understand the celebrity appearances by Eminem and other rappers... but there is one appearance at this funeral that was completely out of line. I'll explain.
Here's where it goes all wrong in my opinion... I'll do a question and answer session to illustrate a few facts about this "tragedy"... my thoughts are in bold type.
Q: Where did this occur?
A: Outside a nightclub on the East Side of Detroit, near Van Dyke and 7 Mile.
Nothing good happens at Van Dyke and 7 Mile
Q: When did this occur?
A: About 4AM
Even fewer good things happen at 4 AM at Van Dyke and 7 Mile
Q: What was the altercation over?
A: A game of pool.
You've got to be kidding me.
Q: Why was "Proof" shot?
A: In retaliation for shooting and pistol whipping someone else
Hmmm... and this guy is being treated as some sort of hero?
Q: Who did he shoot, before the retalliation?
A: A gulf war veteran
WHAT????????????????????????
So, let me get this straight. A thuggish hip-hop artisit with a past history of violence, is being treated as a hero with all sorts of media coverage mourning his death... after pistol whipping a Gulf War veteran over a GAME OF POOL???????
There's a second victim here - getting zero attention. The Gulf War veteran died from his wounds. No charity benefits for him. No lavish funeral. No (and I mean NO) media coverage. I randomly found out this tidbit on a radio talkshow this morning.
So, remember when I said there was a certain celebrity at this thug's funeral that was completely out of line in his attendence???
Kwame Kilpatrick.
That's right. The fat slob, party boy, sultain of civic mis-management himself... was in attendence at a MURDERER'S funeral. On a smaller scale, this is the equivalence of Bush attending the funeral of Saddam Hussein's sons. This is the chief law enforcement official in our city - and he's publicly supporting and mourning the death of someone whose lifestyle was in constant breach of the "progress" of a city.
This is the worst big city in America, by a mile. It's like every few weeks or so, Kwame and his band of thugs give me a new reason to HATE this city. I can't stand it, and I need out of here so bad...
Anyone want to guess what the headlines in the paper would have been - had a "regular Joe" shot and killed a war veteran outside a nightclub??? Any idea who wouldn't be getting any coverage at all?
