  • Anyone take glucosamine?

I know there are a lot of health nuts on this site. Does anyone have any experience with glucosamine? I have a lot of problems with my joints. I'm not even 20 and I feel like I'm falling apart. I hear that this stuff works wonders. It's really freakin expensive though. Just looking to get some input before I go dishing out $20 for a bottle.

Well, I don't take it, but my Mom has a couple of yellow labs who have definitely benefited!

They take glucosomine and chondrotine. Labs are known to have problems with their hips as they get older. They're both 8 and 9 years old. When they started taking the medicine, you could tell a difference within about 2 weeks or so. It was like they each lost about 4 years.

I've been taking it for several years. It's really helped my knees. I started taking it after my Mother reported good results with her mild athritis problems after her Doctor told her to take it. Ken said he uses Move Free, I think that's what my Mom takes too. I just get the generic stuff from Wally-world.

Yes it works. It takes a bit of daily use for a cumulative effect to take effect. Then there is a point of diminishing returns. That means you start taking it, it takes a couple of weeks for you to really notice a difference, then after a couple of months you're a good as you're going to get so you can cut back. Eventually you can stop until you start feeling crappy again. I've been off and on it for years.

Yup...been takin' it for a year now. Seems to help.

I take the Costco brand...rated number in last month's Consumer Reports Magazine. One of the cheapest out there...tested by Consumer's Report for strength...works as stated.

Rage, you're not drinking enough water man. Keep those joints lubricated. Water will do the trick. You're too young to deal with that. Water is your friend.

I drink plenty of water. My back seats (or where my back seats used to be) are littered with empty Poland Spring bottles which reminds me, I should probably get cleaning tomorrow. All of my joints are garbage and the doctors could never figure out why. My knees are crap, my shoulders and elbows hurt frequently and it's impossible for me to tip toe through the house at night because my toes crack and snap with every step I take. When I stretch my groin (to get the height up on my kicks) my hips tend to lock up. It feels like they're going to dislocate sometimes. Sometimes I don't have any problems at all. At times, I can come within 8" of doing a full side split. Other times, I can't even come close to a foot.

Do you have any digestive problems? Digestive problems can cause joint pain. A stomach ulcer can cause your internal organs, like your liver, gall bladder, pancreas, etc., to get out of wack, and this can cause it. You can actually have a stomach ulcer and not even realize it

With medicines like this... check the labels...
First of all... compare the expensive "Move Free" with other cheaper, generic brands... check the amounts of ingredients... if the two match up then buy the generic... A lot of times with those things you are payin' for the name... and glucosamine is glucosamine is glucosamine, no matter what name you put on it... that's the same with medicines like tylenol/acetaminophen... It's the same principle that pharmacists use when they give you the generic (cheaper) brand of a prescription medicine...

Not that I know of. I eat everything and anything and rarely have problems.

Anyone know a generic equivalent of Move Free? I'm going to get a bottle today when I go out to get my tuxedo (girlfriend's prom/ brother's wedding coming up in the next few months).

I'd just go to a drug store and ask about it. It's over the counter and there are several generic brands. Heck, you could even pick up the liver flavor chewables at PetCo
