  • Adding acetone to gasoline

I ran across this subject on another site and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it.

I did this search "ACETONE ADDITIVE TO GASOLINE" and found quite a few sites discussing it. It is supposed to improve gasoline by breaking the surface tension, thus allowing it to vaporize for better combustion and gas mileage.

    Here are a few sites:

    Mythbusters

The TV show Mythbusters did a show on this type of claim. They tested both a carb and FI car. The Acetone was added in the prescribed amount and changed the mileage little. It was actually slightly less. The worst one was the 100 mile per gallon carb. It lost about 8 mpg over the stock carb. All the other claims were bogus too.
