WASHINGTON (June 22, 2006) — Safety Research & Strategies (SRS) Inc., a Rehoboth, Mass.-based safety consulting group with close ties to trial lawyers, has written the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a recall query to examine the effectiveness of the Firestone ATX and Wilderness AT tire recall in August 2000.
Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford Motor Co. recalled an estimated 6.5 million tires that were original equipment on Ford Explorers and other Ford sport-utility vehicles after tread separation accidents caused 271 highway deaths.
“Recalled tires are still causing death and injury crashes,” SRS told NHTSA. “Further, recalled tires, particularly spares, are likely to be put into service in the future with equally devastating results.”
A BFS spokeswoman said there was no need to review the recall, claiming the company retrieved more than 6.3 million of the estimated total still in service.
“We’re very proud of the efforts we made,” she said. “But no recall is 100-percent effective, and NHTSA will tell you the same thing.”

even today, there are many people, whom, if you asked them, know nothing and never heard about this fiasco......some have these tires.
