New Lego kit

It took me around 5 hours to assemble, but it is done! I'm impressed with the way they rigged the doors to open, the engine really turns, there is a functional differential and the detail is awsome, but it's too bad there isnt a gearbox and the suspension is rigid.

I've now got 4 of the Lego giant cars. Here is the most recent: Kit 8653

Something around 18" long, I'm guessing. Lots of little pieces and moving parts. The doors are actuated with air dampers with coil springs. Pretty fun stuff.

My favorite kit is a red supercar #8448 Street Sensation, with a 5 speed transmission, reverse, actuated gull wing doors and fully working suspension.

Even the regular lego kits are getting pricey. How much do these run?

New, they are around $100+ plus shipping, at the lego store website.

They are made in a single limited run, and then retired. Once discontinued, they go for a premium price on Ebay "used" or "new".

You can get them used in box (assembled and displayed, then disassembled) for around $150 - $165 or new In the unopened box for $250.

Do a ebay search for completed auctions on "lego 8448"

The Enzo kit I just completed is still available new at the lego store website for $100. I'm sure it will sell for much more on Ebay after it is retired.

Here is a picture of the first kit I got at age 7. It has a working 3 speed transmission, 4 cylinder boxer engine, rear suspension and steering. The seats are also fully movable.

Here is a picture of the Lego 8880 supercar set. I like this one because it has 4 wheel drive with 3 differentials, 4 wheel steering, 4 wheel suspension, a working V8 engine and a 5 speed transmission with reverse. It is a blast to assemble.

All this talking about legos is making me want to start building again. I have (2) huge rubbermaid containers sitting under my couch overflowing with legos. Nothing like those kits you were talking about though. The best one that I ever made (this is probably 10 years ago) was an 18" long red & white ciggarette boat. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I had more fun building my own contraptions though. The more shit that moved the better. I remember those bigger kits were pretty expensive. Are they still up there?

Yeah, they are still pricey... But worth it because my kids will use them to learn many mechanical concepts.
