  • New old F body

Just came back from Georgia with a 68 Camaro. It is going to be a street/strip car, as it is back halfed, with a dana rear, ladder bars, full frame and a full cage. Car is in good shape, still has all the original chrome trim, but will need a little work to make it street worthy again.
It is set up for a BB which is what I will put in. Car ran 6.17 in the 1/8th, (I saw the time slip), with a 461BB which is impressive as my old Nova only ran 6.50 with a similar setup. Have a JW glide and PTC converter ready for it, but no motor for it at this time. I will build a motor for it. Probably something between a 468 and 540. With 150-250 juice should be good for 5.50 - 5.80 in the 1/8th and that should keep me happy for now. My 95Z will have to take a back seat for awhile, but its still my daily driver. If I ever figure how to put a photo on this site I will add a pix. Can anybody help with that I have tried.

What is the cage certified to?

To post pics, you need to first upload your pictures to a free image hosting provider such as Photo Bucket or Image Shack. Then copy and paste the URL(web address) of the image from the hosting provider into your post.

      Example:

Without the space between "[" and "IMG"

        Cage

Good question, cage is certified to 8.50 or slower. You made me go look at the sticker, which is exactly what the seller said. I have been looking at motor sizes and my sickness is coming back. I feel I can probably run around 8.50 if I build a 632 with regular BB heads, (not the Pro Stock type). With a single dominator and a not too crazy roller cam. Won't even have to run the juice with that setup. Yeah sure I wont run crazy gas. The chassis may not take that much power and that will be the limiting factor. I will try your suggestion for the photos, thanks.

That is a good looking car. I like the color. A 632 on the bottle would be sick.

                      Sick

A sick car for a sick mind I always say. I am thinking more conservative now maybe a 622 instead. White Devil, dosen't yours have a bra on it? We have a wonderful bug here in Fla. called a love bug. They swarm certain times of the year, (mating in flight the pigs), and the acid in their crummy bodies eats paint. The black Z is scarred from them. Thats why the bras are on the cars.

I admitted a long time ago that I was afflicted with that disease they call Pistonheaditis. I have found the cure though. Get out, beat the piss out the car, and go as fast as you can!

Are you going to order a crate shortblock and then build from there? Those new Brodix 483cc 12 degree PB1200 series aluminum BBC heads are supposed to be some bad mama jambas. But it sounds, like you are wanting to build something a little more mild and reliable. Of course your intake runner size will depend how big you go on cubes and how high you'll be spinning it. Are you thinking of running a standard 24 degree BBC head?

What kind of rear does it have? What size tire?

                          Pistonheaditis

Yes doctor your diagnosis is correct, a real gearhead. I have built my own motors for quite a while. I have found a Dart big M block new for 2K, a 622 rotating assy for about the same, all new stuff forged pistons, crank, and H beam rods, but not something you would try to make 2500 hp with. However for 1000-1500 it should be just fine, and even with Dart 360s or the like it should be good for that with some bottle. The rear is a dana 60 with 4.56 gears, which will hold anything I will throw at it. The trans is a full JW glide which will handle that power just fine. The rear tires are 32" tall by 14" wide and only 3 mos. old. Should be a fun ride, not as fast as the old chassis car but still quick, and I will be able to street drive this a little.

Yeah, if you are only going to make 1000-1500 HP and stay under 570 cubes, you could probably stay under 400cc on the intake runner.

The 4.56 gear, glide, and 32" tire combo sounds just about perfect to go mid to high 8's. You could proably even use a little more gear to keep high gear in the upper RPM's through the traps, but if you are going to drive it on the street some that would probably be a good compromise. What is your low gear ratio?

You know years ago I would have never though of putting an aluminum rod in a street strip car, but I am putting BME aluminum rods in my 509. They work perfect in street motors because of the way they are die forged. They are not cheap though.

Are you just going to do a fogger plate type system or direct port?
