  • Paint not doing so well

As some of you know I had the front of my car re-painted over the summer. I paid 400 for them to strip it down and repaint it the way it was (except I had them use a glossy black instead of a flat black for the grill area and headlights). Well after washing my baby this afternoon I noticed that some of the paint is "flaking". Like between the areas of where the black meets the white. Also there is a circular mark on the black part of the headlight housing area, like someone set a can there while it was being painted.

It's been 4 months and it isn't looking 100% . I keep very, VERY good care of my exterior. Is this something I should bring to their attention at the place I had it done and ask them to fix it or take it on the chin for only paying 400?

    Thanks

First thing to do would be to bring it to there attention. $400 is nothing to frown at seeing how they only did the bumper. Are you sure that it hasn't had a light hit in a parking lot? Post some pics and I can probably tell you what has happened. I see it ALL the time...

Ya, I agree with Frossty, I would definitely show it to them and see what theyll do about it. $400 IS a pretty discounted price, but it still should last longer than 4 months If its flaking in areas where its flexible trim parts, Im guessing they didnt use any flex additive to the paint. Other than that, they may not have prepped it very well. Like Frossty said, some pics would help.

Sounds like what happened to my friend's car when he had a quickie Maaco job done. They didn't prep it correctly, and it cracked and flaked all over the place.

$400 is definitely on the lower side of pricing, but it shouldn't be doing this.

Judging by the pics...Id have to say CDJR is on the mark....kinda looks like they probably didnt scuff the area good and it started flaking. Scuffing the area to be painted helps give the paint something to "bite" into...and the flex additive is just that, it helps to keep the paint from flaking and webbing when its put on soft plastic pieces like bumper covers.

Most times when paint flakes or bubbles, it is due to poor prep work. It never hurts to go back to the shop and ask them "What would cause this?"

They will likely tell you with a sheepish look that it was due to bad prep and offer to redo the area.

Unless you ask the question, you can only assume the answer will be no.

The whole ordeal just Pi***s me off. "It will take 3-4 days" I'm like ok, I'll be at college and you can work on it. I come back a week later and it still isn't done. Then I look at it and remind them to fill in the license plate holes and paint the black with a gloss black (all of that was included in the estimate). The whole place is just unprofessional. They have these cars sitting out in the parking lot that look like God made them, so I assume they do good work. I pay them and there's no paperwork, no recipt, I just hand them 400 cold. And now this, maybe a complaint to the BBB is in order.

Request a receipt and politely suggest that they fix the problem, or you can always file a complaint with your the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection, a division of the Attorney General's (Tom Corbett) office. They are powerful and usually swift, and can really put a hurt on a business that practices shady like this.

Eh, just did a little research to try to help you out. I just hate seeing people being taken advantage of. I know it's even more difficult when you are a woman, but that's even more reason for you to stand your ground.

He is Tom Corbett. "Kevin" is just his internet stage name.

He doesn't really have a Mustang either. It was a Lincoln Town Car he just bought.
