  • A flight into reality

The day started fairly good, I had to take a road trip across the state to attend a company meeting. Anytime I have to do that, I always pack a plane or two, the desolate areas I drive though have a few huge fields that at a moment's notice can be the perfect diversion. So I packed up a couple of planes, a handfull of battery packs and off I go. I stopped on the way over and took a flight, a great way to wake up and also to put myself into a good mood considering I was about to sit though a day's worth of boring meetings. The day went pretty much as I figured, I almost fell asleep listening to what I've already heard numerous times during my 18 years with the company. The meeting ended, I started the journey home. As sunset approached, I pulled over at one of those perfect fields and took to the air.......

The flight was fantastic. 10-12 mph winds and my plane loved it. All kinds of basic tricks and high speed passes. I decided to bring it down early for a fresh battery, but before I could do anything I hear it. An amazing howling and whirring jet sound rapidly approaching. The next thing I know there are two A-10 Warthogs flying 300 feet side by side at an altitude of maybe 600 ft. These guys were slow flying literally right over the top of me. I had just finished doing a few rolls, I looked up and the closest A-10 seemed like I could almost reach out and touch it. the Avon Park Bombing Range is in close proximity and having military jets cruising in and out of the area is common.

I stood there in awe and almost forgot that I had a plane still in the air. At that very moment I realized my plane was heading for a tree line, I yanked and banked with a couple of rolls and brought it back toward me. That's when the closest of the A-10's pilot actually wagged his wings in a show of approval! unreal! I followed them with my eyes for as long as I could watch, almost crashing twice just watching in awe how close and slow they just flew....... it was then I realized how lucky I was to be flying and experiencing the joy of this hobby. Not often do you get to see that kind of display and in such close proximity too. The only problem now is that I have this compelling urge to get an A-10 Warthog kit. I don't suppose any of you have felt that compelling urge before have you?

This day will be one that I won't forget, the day that by accident I shared the same basic airspace as a couple of A-10s and for a moment...... could dream. That's what life is all about. It's the experiences!

Oh yea, I've had that urge before.

I was at my cousins house just south or Cornelia Georgia (hundreds of miles from a military base), we were throwing a football around about 2 weeks before Christmas a few years ago. There was a heavy overcast and the air was thick with moisture. When all of a sudden there was this intense sound of screaming afterburning jet engines. I turned and looked up and there was a B1B about 300 feet overhead in a 80 degree bank turning away from us. The wings were in the full extend position and there was heavy condensation down the entire wing. The flames coming from the 4 jet engines were very pronounced. The ground shook as he accelerated away. It sent chills from head to toe. As fast as he appeared he was gone. He must have been following the creek line in-between the hills. What a job. I wanted to come home and build a B1B.
Something like this. (I did not take this picture)

      Great story, Joe.

I love the little things like that. We have an A-10 base up here in CT. Once in a great while, they fly over my house (about 5,000 feet. Not nearly as close as you had). They are my favorite jet. They are brutally ugly, which is why I like them so much.

The coolest military plane experience I ever had, was when I picked my cousin up at the airport (Stewart Air Base). It's a commercial/military shared runway about 45 minutes from my house. I was for him outside, and that's when I heard it... The extremely loud roar of the C-5 Galaxy. I never thought this beast would get off the ground. It shook everything.

Just for reference, here's the size of one. It's unloading a tractor trailer from the nose...

Very cool story. An A-10 has to be your next plane. It was meant to be! Start looking.

I was at the airport here during a airshow. The airshow was about 10 miles away from the airport so a lot of us would go sit at the airport to watch them take off and land. An F-16 was flying wing to wing with a Mustang. The mustang goes to land first and just as they pass over (really really low) The F-16 banks hard and basically points his engine right at us. Unreal. The sound was so sweet. He banked that thing hard!

2005 GTO, Quicksilver, 6-Speed, DynaTech LT's and thats it. 366.6 hp/366.7 tq last time I checked.
            Sold-1995 Dark GreenTrans Am, Auto 63K. BBK Headers/off-road y-pipe/Hooker Exhaust/LPI CAI/Hypertech...need some money!!!

Joe that had to be amazing!
When I was in Highschool I saw a Major do a demonstration in an F-16 at the Pittsburgh air show. You could tell this man was having a blast performing. I remember one pilot saying "That F-16 pilot messed up the whole schedule by going 15 minutes over...not to mention the civil air traffic"

Also the Blue Angels are simply breathtaking.

Good stuff Those A10's are frickin awesome.

I fly into Bradley international every once in a while when I go for joy rides - err, flights.. They usually have a line of A10's near one of the runways.. it's a pretty cool site to see.. It's weird to see them from the air

Good times.. I dream too - even though I'm stuck flying little lawn mower engine airplanes

Thanks broh..... already know about that one. It's a little on the small size, I need something a bit bigger for these older eyes to follow. If I can't find anything, that's the one I'll have to settle on. I don't have the time to do scratch builds so kits are a great time saver.

                      QUOTE]

Don't know if you could- those things are designed for close support, they fly LOW and SLOW, and I have read, they were designed to take a 30MM cannon hit ANYWHERE and keep flying- redundant controls, rudders, engines- the pilot sits in a titanium tub- pretty cool- I see them flying over the Adirondack Mountains, not sure if they are out of Plattsburg or Rome AFB- I was up there hiking one time, and saw two Phantoms flying below the peaks, following the valleys- the really odd thing was one was flying INVERTED....
2001 Z28 A4 - 160 deg t-stat, 3.42 gears, WS6 sway bars, rear springs and shocks, UMI SFC's, Torque Arm and STB, leather Firebird seats, Borla, SLP Y-pipe and lid, ZO6 cam and springs - 332 RWHP and 346 RWTQ, not bad for 'almost stock' - work in progress

perfect serendipity is what comes to mind when I read your post Joe

My neighbor is a pilot instructor and took me up in august in a Cherokee out to Block island. After that I've been contemplating his offer. He's offered to train me so I could get my pilots license.

If I can swing it I might just get it. Imagine able to fly plane's and you're the pilot... wait that's what you do everytime you fly your planes

Oh...... you gotta do it. As long as there is safety in mind, you just gotta do it. One of these days I'll have to get mine. It's a bit pricey to get through it all, but the end is worth it. A friend of mine is a pilot on a Lear Jet, those can haul! High enough that the gauges get frosty too. The takeoff is simply awesome, nothing like a jet for the high speed thrills. I would love to pilot a stunt biplane like the Pitts Special or something like it. The close quarters manouvers with those is amazing.

I've been spending time on a simulator, even doing aircraft carrier landings. Those guys have got a set of brass ones. From up high the deck looks like a postage stamp, doesn't seem much bigger even when you get up pretty close either. After months of practice, I still only nail one in three landings. I would do a little better in real life, some of the depth perception of a screen vs live is lost. Imagine being lunched from a catapault...... that's gotta rock.
