I have a 85 dodge p/u with a 318. It looks like the rear main seal needs to be replaced. does anyone know if i have to take out the motor or can i just drop the trany? thanks

I'm not sure if they are still the way they were in 1970 but if they are it's neither. My 340 was under the rear main crank cap. So to change it the oil pan had to be dropped then unbolt the rear main cap. The seal was 2 half seals (It looked like you took a seal and cut it into 2 180 degree pieces.) You had to push the one out that was between the crank and the block. It would slide around the crank. The set the new on down and feed it around. Then set the other half in the crank cap and bolt it back on.
