  • Wow, I saw a pretty hair raising accident

I was driving along a divided 6 lane suburban state road that goes though town, loaded with traffic, everything from cars to large semi trucks. As my pack of traffic approaches one of the intersecting streets, this little old blue haired lady decides to pull out into traffic. Initially, there wasn't much room but if she had hit the throttle, there wouldn't have been a serious problem. Unfortunately the dumb @$$ pulled out in front of the semi and proceeded to go 20 mph in a 55 mph zone. Well, let me give props to the semi driver. He was hard on the brakes and tried his best, but there was not much he could do. He slowed down enough to keep from killing her, but he did plow the back of the car with enough force as to spin her right off the road. He crumpled the back of that Cadillac pretty good. There were tons of witnesses that were all praising the truck driver for his reflexes, he was pinned in traffic and couldn't bail in any direction or there would have been casualties.

As I've said for many years, once drivers get up there in years, they need to take a mandatory physical driver's test or lose their license automatically.

Agreed, and I am getting long in the tooth. However as of three years ago I could still cut a pro tree reaction time in the .4xx range. I hope I have sense enough to stop when I can't safely drive any more.
I live in Fla. the silver hair capital of this country and daily I see drivers who should be tested for ability or stupidity. Some of these older drivers were always awful, when they get older they stink even more.

          Amen to that.

But I notice that a lot of people don't know how to drive with semi's around. I saw an accident about two years ago.. Kinda the same thing.

It was a young girl who didn't realize that trucks need much more time to stop than a car. Approaching a light, she decided at the last second to pull into the next lane in front of a semi, he slammed on the brakes but he still hit her and pushed her forward 15 feet.

You NEVER cut off a semi or get ahead of him. I tell this to all my girlfriends since I saw this accident. They all say they never think twice about getting over. They just don't realize it takes a lot longer to stop a vehicle that weighs so many tons.

              I agree.

Something was in the air Friday. I was rear ended on the way home. Now I have to get the rear bumper repainted again. She did something that's hard to teach yourself not to do. We were in a right hand turning lane. There was only 1 car on the road we were turning on but it was in the right lane so I didn't go. She made the mistake of looking to her left rather than watching the car in front of her. Her reflexes took over and she ran in the back of me. Remember this rule and it will never happen to you, never look to the left until the car in front of you has gone.

Also Friday a friend of mine back in the shop at work was involved in a really bad accident. He was coming down Georgia 400 near Cumming when he ran into the back of a STOPPED dump truck with no lights on. The fog was pretty heavy at the time. Nobody knows yet why some fool left it there. His sternum is broken in 2 places, broken collar bone, several broken ribs, and his right hand is broken in several places. He's lucky (which may be debatable) to be alive.

Excellent advise. I'm guilty of doing this. I've never hit somebody but have come darn close.
