  • New project vehicle!! UPDATED with pics!!!!!!!

When I envisioned myself restoring a '73 Chevy, this is not quite what I had in mind. My wife and I are taking possession of a '73 motor home. We're getting it for free, and would like to fix it up. It's not in horrible condition, but it's showing it's 34 years. It's vintage '70s, even has shag carpeting on the doors!! It'll be a good opportunity for me to really get some experience at body work, paint, engine, etc. As for the inside, it needs new (or redone) cabinets, flooring, and upholstery. And that shag carpet has to go. Among other things.

The camper is based on a '73 C-30 truck. I know virtually nothing about these vehicles, so any input anyone wants to give is greatly appreciated. I don't know what engine is in it yet (other than it's a V8), until I look at the documentation.

This will be a long-term project, as we get the money and motivation to slowly work on it. First up will probably be work on the engine and tranny. At least get it running reliably before we start on other things. It starts and runs now, but from what I'm told the fan belt is constantly loosening itself, and there appears to be a leak at the back of the tranny, where the driveshaft comes out. It supposedly only has about 50,000 miles on it.

We're picking it up this weekend, hopefully. I'll post some pictures when we get it home. And will definately keep everyone updtaed on the project as it goes, although it will likely be spring until any work starts.

Sounds like a cool project, Dave.

My opinion... Make it the vintage motor home it is. Keep the shag. Paint the interior/exterior those so-bad-they're-good 70's colors. Fix and/or replace the appliances with ones from that era (usually orange or brown in color).

It would be kind of wild to have a new/old motor home like that. Either way, post some pics when you have a chance.

from what I've read a 307, 350, and 454 were the available V8's in a 73 C-30 truck. Would be nice if it had a 454 in it! I'm usually not that lucky, though.

Anyone know of a site online like this one but for (older) Chevy trucks? I'd like to do some research.

                    UPDATE!

Just got the beast home! If any of you have seen the movie RV with Robbin Williams, they call their RV "The Rolling Turd". We've kinda adopted that name for ours. It's butt-ugly! I'll try to post some pics tomorrow, it was dark when we got it home.

I've found that it's based on a G-30 van, not a C-30 truck. It's a '73 350 SBC, so parts should be plentiful and cheap. So far I know of the following engine-related mechanical issues: fuel leak at the carb, dripping onto manifold, oil leak at back of tranny dripping onto exhaust pipe, an oil leak somewhere on the manifold or valve cover, a loose fan/alternator belt that causes overheating when the fan doesn't turn properly and that won't stay tight, and a ticking in the engine, possibly a valve tapping or a leak somewhere. The engine starts and runs great. I plan on basically stripping the engine down when the weather warms and seeing what kind of condition it's in, and fixing and replacing things as they need it.

There is of course lots of rust to deal with, and some body work needs to be done, and the lime green paint needs repainted badly. The inside needs a complete makeover. Will post pics soon. Not bad for free.

Here are some pics of the rolling turd!

I got some pics this morning. I couldn't find my good camera so I had to use my crappy 2 megapixel camera, so the pictures aren't great. But here goes... the rolling turd in all it's glory!!

                      Here are some exterior pictures....

Here's a picture of the rust inside the hood. It's hard to see in the shadows, but if you look close at the top of the pic you can see it's rusted all the way through and there are several good-sized holes...

What do you guys think? Remember I got it for free. My only investment so far as been a battery. See my previous posts for the problems it has, other than the obvious lack of taste.
