  • Wolfman - get a load of this coyote pic

    From Today's newspaper (Friday March 30, 2007)
Pic was taken on Catherine street here in historic Newport, RI
The Coyote's are actually expanding their range. Besides Crows, their one of the few large creatures that have adapted and found a way to thrive amongst man Coyotes are not native to Rhode Island. Figured you'd enjoy the pic. Now only if the Wolf had it as good.

beautiful animals. After this post I read up on them. I can't find a difference between them and wolves. A lot of them you couldn't tell apart from a wolf that easily. Other than the fact that they don't travel in packs, what's the big difference between wolves and coyotes?

a whole lot of differences. the wolf is much larger and more powerfull. it also does not go after humans, a coyote will... they have been known to snatch small children out west... and peoples small pets.. . they are more of a scavanger.. where as a wolf is a hunter.. .eats fresh kill only...

wolves hate coyotes...and the yot's know it... a wolf will kill one on site.... they stay away from wolves...

a coyote has been spotted in every county in VA, MD, and even DC... they are survivors.. but loners........more like a jekyl.... dont have the personality or the social skills of the wolf, not even close... much "dumber" if you will.

dont get me wrong, i dont dislike em..... just showing you the diff. the wolf is
a majestic creature with many skills and social attributes close to the human... more "refined" if you will.......

I have to somewhat disagree.....yes, the wolf and coyote are very different, but they will travel in packs, and work together to take down an animal, mostly deer. Where my father and I hunt in northeastern PA, coyotes have become quite a problem, actually helping to take an abundance of deer. Just about everyone we talk to that lives in the area has heard the numerous "yips and screeching" of the coyotes at night, and not just of one. Definitely more of a nuissance animal, and their numbers are populating very rapidly. I heard they're a big problem in South Carolina, too.

i read the coyotes don't travel in packs, but you can sometimes find them with other coyotes of the same gender. But not a "pack."

Wolf is right about what he said.

Also physical differences include coyotes having longer necks, bigger ears, more narrow mouths, and much thinner in size. Good looking animals though. Wolves are a lot more sophisticated when compared to coyotes.

We have coyotes here. I hear them at night. It can make your hair stand up on a quiet summer night. I've been hanging out with a few friends on my deck and all of a sudden we'll here a couple coyotes in the woods behind my house. It's pretty cool really.

strange thing about the Coyote's here is that Newport is on an Island

Deer in spring and summer usually SWIM to the island, I've seen em in the night time hours but the only way for coyote's to get here is via the Newport bridge, or 1 of the 2 bridges in Portsmouth, on the north side of the Island or swim. Strange thing there has been no news of hitting Coyotes in traffic. I guess it is possible they swim here also

                      Agreed.

I'll just enjoy them from the safety of my deck. When you hear a few of them yelping in the pitch black, it's downright eerie. Very cool.

I would love to hear the howl of a wolf in the wild. I've only seen them at a sanctuary my cousin volunteers for upstate.
