My brother's car has a leak in the #1 cylinder into the coolant jacket. He has a new gasket set to do the repair. We're starting to take it apart tonight. What are your recommendations on how to prep and seal the new gasket? What should we look for to inspect the head and deck surfaces?

If I was you I'd have the heads Resurfaced. For what you pay for that, its not worth skipping and having to tear it apart again b/c it was slightly warped. When I do head gaskets I always have the heads Surfaced. You guys are replacing both head gaskets? V6 right?Eddie

I'll recomend that to my brother. Just one head, the rear or left one on the 3.1l V6.Originally posted by ConEliteIf I was you I'd have the heads Resurfaced. Yeah Its always recommended. B/c you replace one now and in 6 months the next one starts leaking. Esh. Believe me I learned from experience. As my Old man told me, Do it once and do it right. lol I guess I didnt listen once, and never again would I repeat that mistake.Eddie

My bro just called me...
It looks like he put the head gaskets from FelPro in upside down. They werent maked and way specifically, but after looking at the old gaskets it is apparent they should have gone the other way. He says there is a metal ring lining each cylinder opening in the gasket and the 3 rings are all 1 piece connected by thin metal on one side of the gasket. He put the metal side down, and on the old gaskets it was up. FYI- the heads are aluminum.
Also, the Haynes manual lists a torque spec for the rocker arms?! According tot he book, you just torque them down, there is no lifter preload to set?! How can that possibly be right?!Tracy
