  • Startin' the project 400 HP this week/weekend...

Ok guys, gonna start ripping into the top end of the LT1. What I have so far...

Fully Ported and polished LT1 heads
    1.6" exhaust valves
    Comp 918 beehives
    Chromemoly pushrods and Guideplates
    CC 7/16 1.6RR NSA
    LT4 extreme duty timing kit
Full top end fel pro set
    Nu-Tek custom Comp cam
    Spare ODBII computer
Bottle of Royal purple assembly lube
    24 pack Bud Light

Any tips guys? Swap seems really simple. Hoping to finish in a day.

Heads flow 249/173, and the cam is 226/231 .560/.569

Will the stock computer adjust to the above? I plan on getting the PCM tuned, but I wanna do that after I put in bigger injectors and a rear gear.

If you knock this out in One day, I'll Tip my hat. Its nothing extremely hard but its going to be time consuming. Should take the better part of 2-4 days. 1 if your striping it real quick and slap everything back on. A job like that pays like 26 hours. Thats simply for a cam Swap. So you should have a ball. Good luck man. Keep us posted

Awww, come on eddie, put the jose away

2-4 days? I'm thinking a few hours to strip it down, and the rest of the day to put it all back together. I pulled and rebuilt a 2.6 in a day, (worked until 6:30 am), I think I can swap a set of heads in under 4.

I was just wondering if anybody knew of any specialty tools I might need, nifty not everyday tools that might help, etc...

I dunno....... I don't see you doing it that fast. As confining as these engine bays can be, I think more like 12 hours including buttoning up the exhaust. Keep in mind you have to pull the radiator and condensor, plus everything off the front of the engine. That really might be a two day job. As a matter of fact, I would force it into a two day schedule minimum. You'll want the silicone to set overnight when you do the intake manifold gaskets and install. That way you can avoid overly pushing out the silicone and end up with the dreaded intake manifold oil leak.

Handy tools would be several extensions from 1 inch to 6 inches, a universal joint for your ratchet extensions, the usual small wrenches for close work plus a torque to angle gauge. After 93 the headbolt torque method was changed from regular torque readings. I've still done it that way but it should be torque to angle. A lifter removal tool helps too. Other than that, it's pretty much like any other with the exception of cramped quarters.

i'm going to start at 11 am. I was thinking I'd work into the night. Whatever I don't finish that night, should only take a few hours the next day. I hope anyway. I could be underestimating this job. I'll probably work on it 12 hours saturday, then spend half of sunday on it as well. I hope not tho

LMAO- ha ha ha good laugh to start the day. (And its Jack, Only Jay for me please)

Yeah It is pretty much straight forward but something like this I would not rush. I'd say yeah you can finish it in one weekend. I'd say have it striped in about 2-4 hours. Then Lunch and a couple beers. Clean everything up and start to set your gaskets and all that good stuff. Around that time it should be 6ish (you had couple extra beers) then Install the cam and lifters and heads. I'd Say if you at least have everything broke down, Cleaned and Head and cam in, then your on time. Take pictures man, Keep us posted.

when ...did you do water pump/and/or opti? if you havn't..might was well do it when its down...the opti maybe not..but the water pump for sure if its got miles on it.

the pcm needs to be redone. but finish the mods first. if you remember, i sent mine to Ed Wright in Tulsa... with a complete list of mods. he did a great job. but there are so many good super tuners now out there... they can put the car and the dyno and get it perfect. what about throttle body? more air in + more air out = hp

not a bad idea ken... I called the dealer, 363 for a water pump, and 490 for the opti. WOW!! Those two alone I could buy a 383 stroker! The parts at advance would be like 400 altogether, but that's still more than I wanna spend. This opti was replaced by the dealer before I got the car, and I got it at 75k. I found the receipt in the glove box. It also had the intake leak fixed, and the rear main seal replaced. It had receipts for every oil change, so I know the guy took care of it. I don't think I'll replace those right away.

I don't trust the parts they sell at advance auto anyway. Those are big jobs, I'd have to get genuine gm parts or I'd be under the hood again in 2 years swapping out that reman'd taiwan junk.
