  • Is a LT1 better than a LS1

well my friend got a 98 Z28,intake, SLP loudmouth,we raced 3 times each time I pulled off the line real hard on him then he would catch up fast, and I would win by about 2 cars we were runnig a 1/4 strip,we got in a huge argument over wich engine is better,And like all LS1 owners(no offense guys)
he got real cocky LS1 are way better,Lt1's are old and outdated,u got lucky,So to make a long story short we took our argument to the internet,I found this and he got real mad, how much truth is in this,
    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...0120705AAvSBwP,
everthing else just said the LT1 has more low mid range torque and will beat a ls1 off the line, the torque dies out ,the ls1 has better high rpm torque and keeps going

no motor is better then any, it comes down to person prefernce and money. if u got a kid with a LT1 and 10k into his motor and a kid with a LS1 and 1grand into his motor, the lt1 will destroy that LS1 but the same goes the other way around.

but we all kno the SBC Gen1 motors are the best

Sorry guys but the LS1 motor is better all around. Besides some obvious points like the LS1 doesn't have the OPTI, the LS1 doesn't have the Siamese ports like the SBC/LT1 so the cooling of the head is more even which gives it a more even cylinder burn. Also the head design of the LS1 allows more CFM of air into it. About the best numbers I have seen for head flow out of the LT1 is around 280 CFM @.500 lift. The stock head is around 205 CFM @.500 lift. I have seen numbers for the LS1 over 320 CFM @.500 lift. Some modified LT1 heads flow about the same as the stock LS1 heads. About the only thing I like better about the LT1 is the reverse cooling but GM got sued for patent infringement over it and had to stop doing it.

Engine advancements...the LS1 is better than the LT1. Homles you're right it's known that LT1's grunt off the line is better than LS1. Where the LT1 start to die in the power band...LS1's are just waking up. Which explains how he was catching you.

The LS1 is also known to respond to mods better.

Both are fantastic engines for different reasons. The LS1 is a bot more advanced, just as the LS2 is even more advanced than that.

The main thing both the LT1 and LS1 have in common? They are worlds better than the Ford 5.0 and 4.6!!!

I didn't say that, I was just answering your question. It's happened in the past in the name of government regulations. I'm just pointing out that saying they wouldn't take a step back is a hollow argument.

After test driving a couple of LS1s recently and making a seat of the pants comparison comment on how they both perform it sure seems like the LT-1 has more grunt at the lower throttle levels. It seems like you have to put your foot into the LS1 a little more to acheive the same part throttle acceleration. However, as you put your foot into it harder and let the revs climb, a stock LS1 pulls about as hard as a bolt on equipped LT-1. This seems correct as my now totalled WS6 used to run 13.0 at 107 using street radials, it would beat a stock LS1 out of the hole and they couldn't quite catch me in the 1/4. It had all the bolt ons with a stock cam and heads.

Put those same type of mods in an LS1 and it would likely be right at 12.7@ 110 mph in the quarter, a good 30 HP better than the LT-1.

As far as which is better... does it really matter? The "My dog being better than your dog" has never been a worthy arguement, the true answer is whatever floats your boat. As a point of referance, I would rather have a mint LT-1 than a trashed and used up LS1 that burned oil and was unreliable. Once past that point, anything can be made to be brutally fast. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. I could build a V6 that would blow the doors off 99% of the cars out there. The only problem is it would take $4000 just for the bare block and that is the cheapest part of the combination.

LT1 has more Low end torque than the LS1. My brothers 96Z had all the bolt ons and Me with simply suspension work beat his best times at the track. LS1's are very under-rated. The LT1 is a good platform but as 88bird5spd said. It all depends on how much money your willing to put into it.

                          Stock for Stock:
                          LS1 > LT1

Public demands for more performance is what is driving companies to build more powerful cars. Government restrictions is what's making them more efficient.

My C6Z dyno'd 483 RWHP and gets over 30 mpg on the highway and over 20 mpg mixed driving.

30 mpg and 483 RWHP...doesn't get any better than that. At least for now...
