Im looking at a S/W .40 cal sigma for home defence. I dont plan on entering any shooting compititions with it! lol The main problem iv heard is that the trigger is way to hard to pull but can be fixed. I think its around 12lbs of pressure but have heard with modifacation can be tuned down to 4-5 lbs. the one im looking at is $300 with case and a clip. its 3 months old and i know the guy that is selling it. Any info or reviews would be great. And is the price ok. its in great shape

price is ok..but that trigger pull....sheez.. a guns no good if you cant hit what you are aiming at... thats way too much trigger pull. price out the mod from a gun smith before you lay down the cash. the gun itself is a reliable.

Like Ken stated, that's too much pull. Sigs are great guns, but for home defense, you want something easy to shoot. My Berretta .40 is perfect for that. It has a nice, easy trigger, but not overly sensitive. Will your friend let you go to the range with him and try the gun first?

That's your best bet.

I have a S/W .40 in stainless that I purchased from a friend's brother. Very nice gun. That does sound like a good price. I paid a little more than that for the stainless with 2 clips.

I'll second that. Not only is that a lot of pull weight, DAO guns have a longer stroke that some people don't like. Hmm..3months old...why is he selling it? If he doesn't like it...

Something else to consider. Modifications to a defensive gun can be a problem if a dirtbags family tries to sue you in civil court. Just one of the facets of our legal system that sucks.

You should get a 45 Auto or a 9mm. Thats perfect for self-defence/home use. Nice and light and very easy pull. Thats what we have. Glock.

I am an owner of a SW Sigma .40cal. I like the gun very much and have other guns to compare it to. It points nicely and isn't cluttered with a lot of switches, buttons, and other unnecessary features. I bought mine many years ago (around 1995) when they first came out and have only had one problem with it. The feed ramp was steep and would sometimes jam with certain types of ammo (usually blunt nose). I machined the ramp angle back slightly and it has never jammed again. I suspect that the newer ones don't have this problem. The trigger pull isn't overly difficult but it does have a long trigger pull due to the hinged trigger and because it is double action only. Some shooters don't like this but it doesn't really bother me. Glocks have a similar feel. I think the .40 cal is good round. Much better than a 9mm, IMO. Plenty of power but easily controllable with a little practice. Good luck in your decision.

We use a .40 Glock at work and the .40 is definately a good round. i don't know anything about the Sigma itself. But if you're unsure, shop around. You should be able to find a used, inexpensive .40 out there somewhere. I'd prefer a .45 but it's harder to find a cheap one.

My suggestion would be that you go to a range that lets you rent weapons and actually fire anything you would be interested in buying. There are two ranges here in Mobile that allow you to do that, and I highly recommend anybody who is thinking of purchasing a gun to use this option. I personally have fired a Glock, albeit about 6 or 7 years ago, and I couldn't stand it. I ended up with a Beretta 96FS, which is a .40 cal, and I love it. I've done plate racing with it, shooting competitions, and use it for self defense, and it is a great weapon. However, it is difficult to carry concealed unless you can wear a jacket, and Mobile, AL is not known to be a "jacket weather" town!

The most important thing to remember is that if the gun doesn't feel right in your hands, you'll never like firing it. You have to find a gun that fits your personal grip comfortably, regardless of the name stamped on the gun. Some people like those cheapo Hi-Point guns because they feel right, and some people only like Colt 1911's (two very extreme ends of the money spectrum there). However, you also have to find a balance between the feel and the price. There's no sense in buying a $1,500 hand cannon when a $400 gun that feels very comfortable can do the trick and not make you miss a house payment.

The mere sight of a gun in the hands of a protective homeowner should be enough to scare off any scumbags. The moment you have to squeeze off your first shot... that's when you're already in trouble. It means they probably tried, or already fired a shot themselves.

J/K You don't really need quite that much velocity... It sounds like a great deal to me. But I would also try to take it to the range and put a few rounds through it.

My wife's got a Walther PPKS .380 - a really nice peice. I've got a Keltec P3AT .380 - it's supposedly the world's smallest and lightest .380 handgun.

We both have concealed-carry licenses - she keeps the PPKS in her purse. I like the concealability of the Keltec. It fits in the front pocket of my jeans and no one can tell it's there.
