  • Spent some time with the new Camaro Convertible Concept

Thanks to mi amigo Ken Collings, I was able to spend some time with the new Camaro and there are some things that I really feel should be shared. Now those of you that have been around, know that I can be an opinionated and outspoken person at times. There are times I force myself to keep my opinions to myself, this isn't one of them.

After a clandestine operation to get me into the secure area, we wind our way though all the displays until we reach the Chevrolet exhibit. Immediatly this car stands out among the others, I notice that something looks different. It's not really different, but a camera lens tends to make the car have less depth on film. In person the lines are superb. The front end has a 3D effect with the front grill, a subtle hood vent just above the grill at the base of the hood. The Streamlined cowl induction hood is very sleek and tastefully done, blending into the windshield with high tech looking windshield wipers snug in their spot at the base of the windshield. The side mirrors and side marker lights add a touch of elegant performance, so do the 21" front wheels and 22" rears. They are monsters! Even the detail in the wheels is awesome. Something you don't immediatly notice is the color coordinanated painting on the wheels. From a glance, it replicates the look of the old redline tires with the color around the circumferance of the rim.

The interior will remind you of the 69 Camaro only with some modernization. The big news is that you no longer feel encapsulated, the interior room is much improved. Also gone is the passenger footwell hump from the cat converter that is so beloved in the 4th gen F-body. The leather interior is stitched in a retro look, back seat access is awesome. Nothing here to complain about. The blend of black and white leather combined with brushed aluminum accents around the windshield and interior really make this look classy. This is a musclecar without any mistake, only a level of refinement and finish that wasn't really ever conveyed in previous models.

the rear fender contours are just so right, so is the rear fascia and exhaust treatment complete with a fuel filler cap on top of the rear quarters. This ain't no boy racer wannabe, this is the real deal folks. This car was not a pusher, it was a fully functional protoype that runs and drives.

I came away from the exhibit with a completely new perspective on the new Camaro. It looks way better in person, it feels rock solid, it just works. There's no other way to say it. When you see it in person, you'll see it for yourself. This baby is gonna rock, it blows away anything that has come from Chevrolet for as long as I can remember.

Now I just gotta figure out how to pay for it.

Well written Joe.. I want to see what the final price is for the coupe and are they offering the LS3... That should be an awesome ride. The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is the interior and the dash.. A little too retro for my tastes.

i love the exterior, but I hope they do something with the gauge cluster. I don't like that setup.

Something like the new GTO interior would look killer.

Glad you got to go see it. From reading your posts since '97 I know how opinionated you can be . If your saying such good things and not finding glaring faults, this car will be a hit. To be honest I'd love a 'vert myself

I wish I could have seen it with the top up, that was the only letdown.

Norm probably has one on pre-order already!

Thanks for the pictures and masterful exposition, you've got me ready to sell my soul for one of these cars.

Those thoughts seem to be similar to what most folks say when they see the car in person. I know that's exactly what I thought when I saw the coupe at the D.C. show this year. Maybe the 'vert will make it here for the next show!

As for seeing it with the top up...being a concept, I doubt it even has a top.

                Just curious...what was the event?

I'm surprised how production the interior looks...other than for the crazy, out of the world, gauges...you can see the patterns on the surface and what not.

                    I like...too bad I can't afford it, well, I could...just can't.

The leather interior looks better in person too. The needle work was good, the leather was soft but held shape.

Those gauges........ on film I don't care for them but in person it gives a 3d effect as well, it's actually cool. When the lights illuminate the effect is compelling. The only part that I might criticize would be the placement of the gauges on the center console. I didn't care for that location in the 60's, and I don't care for it now. I like them near the rest of the gauges.
