  • Project 400 HP has begun... w/pic

Guys, it's more of a PITA than I thought. Got out there around noon. Couldn't find the compressor, so I gotta do everything by hand. Didn't have a fuel line removal tool so that thing has been in the way, and the intake was previously removed and CAKED with silicone. I swear to god every bolt was torqued to 70 ft lb's until it came out. Wasn't so bad up front but the 4 in the rear... wow.

Hands are all cut up and I haven't even removed the header bolts yet. I'm havin' a blast tho!!

here's where I'm at. Intake, radiator, valve covers, alternator, air intake, etc.. all removed.

I plan on having the header bolts taken out, heads removed, and the front of the motor disassembled in a couple more hours.

Um, yeah...... tried to warn you. It's the kind of project that must be done out of love and enjoyment. Those are the only things that make up for the PITA contortions that you have to get yourself into just to be able to get to the fasteners. I'm there in spirit bro.

I told you. Just like Joe said, if u dont absolutely love this stuff you should not try it. Thats awesome that you almost have everything down.Getting the Cam to Clear is going to be another thing. ha ha . Your changing the cam out right? Keep track of how many hours it takes you. Sorry to hear about the compressor situation.

After I posted on here, I pulled the water pump, pulled the bolts out of the crank balancer, took off the Y pipe, dropped the headers, pulled the heads.

It started pouring so I had to put it up. I got about 6 hours into it so far.

It sucks man, it's like GM said "Hey, there's too much room to get to this bolt, we better put a stiff piece of plumbing here in the way.

I'm lovin' it tho guys. I'm shooting for being done tomorrow.

I just have to get a claw to pull the balancer off, then i can pull the distributor, and pull the timing cover. Then I can pull the cam. Then it's putting it all back together.

Hopefully I get a full day in tomorrow. It's supposed to t-storm again tomorrow tho. I just hope it's not buckets like today, cuz i'll work thru a sprinkle or light rain, but this was, as forrest would say, big ol' fat rain.

Even if I got an entire day in I wouldn't have finished it in a day like I thought. Definitely a two day job or so. I'm makin' good time tho I think, especially for the pace I'm working. I'm keeping it clean as possible.

The cylinder walls look great, but a lotta carbon on the pistons.. I took some pics, but I have no laptop at home (crappy dell, power pack won't work and my battery died). I'm at a friends house gettin tank'd right now. I'll keep ya'll updated.

ok guys, finally finished. I have open headers now and i finished at 9 pm, so I can't start it. I can't wait til tomorrow to fire it up.

BTW, this is the ONLY way I'll ever do headers. This made it so easy to get bolts on the headers, and the oil line that runs to each head on the back of the head, egr that runs to the header, spark plugs, etc.. Made it a breeze.

Ignore the farmer tan, my gf took some pics.

ONLY way to do it man. Leaning over makes it hard. Can't see, reaching over, twisting your arms, etc... That was almost like having the motor out of the car.

                  Few more pics...

                  Putting in the new cam...

                  The new heads bolted on.

ok i uploaded a video but it has to process on youtube before it can be viewed.

It's misfiring on cylinder 6, the spark plug wire is toast. I gotta run to the speed shop to get a new one.

some ticking. Might have to adjust valve lash on the drivers side. Sounds like the ticking is coming from over there.
