  • 400 tpi

I was thinking about replacing the 305 in my transam with a 400 small block and wanted to get others opinions on wether or not it would be to much work to convert a 400 to a tuned port system. All opinions are helpfull. Appreciate any advice.

The stock TPI setup falls flat on its face at 5,000 RPM.

There are aftermarket plenum, manifold and runner kits to help it do better.
I recently saw a running Firebird Formula with a TPI in it available for $700 on craigslist locally. If I were you, I'd look for something like that to start with and then later you can upgrade the manifold, runners and plenum.

It is also possible to run the TPI electronics with a LT1 manifold converted over to fit a standard SBC. If it was me, I'd go that route before spending a ton on aftermarket runners, plenum and manifold base. Plus it would be a cool coversation piece because it would be different.

a 400 is no trouble to put into a 3rd gen with tpi. the stock intake is a huge restriction as mentioned. you'd want to go with an hsr or some other aftermarket intake. if you don't plan on making huge hp with it, a good port job on the stock LTR setup wouldn't be too bad. aftermarket intake and runners would be better, but much more expensive. you'll also need a custom tune and bigger injectors.
