  • Losing My Job

I just found out on Friday the corporate headquarters is shutting our office down. It's a small satellite office... Only four of us. We've been here for over four years. My entire time I've known all of you. I even signed up to this forum at this very desk.

It's five minutes from my house, and a laid-back, no-stress environment. November 30th... It's all over.

The irony of it all is the four of us started this office when our former place of employment, AC Neilsen, had massive lay-offs. We approached this company and they agreed to start a Connecticut office (they are based in Vermont).

Losing a job with three kids at home is about as stressful as it gets.

hope you find a good job soon. the only reason I'm up here is due to the gvt... There really isn't nothing else here. It's getting harder and harder to find a decent paying office job these days when they're being replaced with lower-paying, less-skill required jobs (which this aspect do not show up in the wall street job #'s ) . The way I see it the middle class is deflating as a whole and your office is the latest victim. 3 kids now that's rough

I can't tell you how great it is to get support from people I've never met in person. I consider all of you real friends and I'm blessed to know you.

Let me update you a bit. A lot has happended in the last hour surprisingly.

I applied at Sikorsky Aircraft yesterday. My wife and both her parents work their. My in-laws have been there for over 20 years, so I have some real possibilities there. It's a very hard place to get in because they are known to overpay (plus they're union), and currently have 22 years worth of contracts. That's stability.

I applied for riveter, multi-machinist, and avionics assembler positions. Two of the supervisors called me in the past hour (avionics and riveter). My father-in-law is an engineer and talked to them both today. I have an interview set-up next week for both positions.

The nice thing about Sikorsky is, if I don't like the department I'm in, I can put in for a transfer every 90 days. I'd rather stick with one position, but options are nice.

This is the plant in Startford, CT where the Blackhawk and CH-53 is built, among a few others. Very cool place to work.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it works out. Thanks again to everyone for the thoughts and prayers. There will never be a better place on the net or elsewhere than right here.

                            Thanks again, everyone.

It is true... People tend to get comfortable in one place, and don't realize there are better paying jobs out there. Times like this is when you get up and look. Hopefully it's a blessing in disguise.

If I get the job at Sikorsky, it will be nice feeling overpayed for once.
