    Hey guys,

I figured I post some pictures of my 96 Trans Am project to feel like a bigger part of the f-body.com family. I barely know anyone yet, and I love it here already! I'm sure you've all seen something similar, no?

That sure seems like a lot of carbon buildup as well as oil sludge. How many miles>?

Good luck with the project. Get rid of those crappy GM hose clamps.

There doesn't seem to be THAT much sludge in it. It looks pretty typical for maybe a 100k+ lt1. I took apart a 5.3 out of a 99 silverado that had >50k that had way more buildup than that. I wish I would have taken pics cuz you wouldn't believe it unless you saw it. I have seen a lot worse carbon buildup on pistons as well(they can easily be cleaned up before he bolts the heads down)...

Nice project! I have got an lt1 sitting in my garage that eventually will be rebuilt and installed in my '92...

I'm not sure what kind of oil the guy before me used, but as soon as I got the car, I changed it to mobile 1. The car has a hair over 100,000 miles, so I didn't think it was in too bad of shape when I took it apart.

My plans for the car are pretty much the same as the average LT1 guy; slowly add upgrades to the car as money allows. I got the heads freshened up (valve job, etc) and am putting them back together with crane cams 1.5 ratio roller rockers and comp cams hi-tech pushrods. I'm hoping to add a new SLP CAI and a loudmouth soon .

It is my daily driver, and I am planning on taking it to the strip now and then. Blowing my head gasket after only 2 weeks of having the car is making me scared to race the car though. The last thing I need is a spun rod bearing. I can barely afford what I am doing now, there is no way I could afford a rebuild! I'm praying for better luck than I have had so far!

                Good luck with the project.

Don't be afraid to race it at the strip. If you build it right, nothing will happen to it. Did the head gasket go before you did any work to the car?

Yeh, my radiator cracked and the car overheated after like 2 weeks of driving it (which im assuming caused the blown head gasket). I'm just worried because im going to have a freshened up short block, but the bottom half is going to still have the 100,000 miles on it. It seems like everyday I read about spun bearings...I guess i'll get over it; theres no way that i'm not racing it!!! haha

As long as you take care of it correctly... The LT1 is a solid engine. The bottom half shouldn't give you any issues.

A 67 427 Vette with like 500 HP; no it is not mine, but I wish it was! It is owned by my friend that has worked in hot rod shops all his life. He has been helping me through the project a little and has taught me a lot (i'm only 17 so i'm still learning). It is kind of a learning experience for him also because he is not used to computer controlled cars or cars that take like 10 hours to get the exhaust manifolds off! I'm going to set up my signature as soon as I get some good pictures of my car; Thanks for the help!

Check out the attached pictures of my friends Vette and truck. I'm planning on beating that Vette some day in my Trans Am...haha
