Well, the thing is...... with drive by wire systems, you can tune the throttle curve however you see fit. In essence, you could get in there and limit throttle to a certian percentage, you could program in a delayed response, reduce throttle on shift, all kinds of neat stuff. If you are a mechanical linkage fan, it feels down right annoying. I just drove 1100 miles in a new rental car with drive by wire and hated the response. Once things ramped up it was acceptable, but that's it. I wouldn't purchase that vehicle period. I guess it could be a double edged sword.

I have throttle-by-wire on my Acura. I couldn't stand it. It was either slow. crawling starts or hard launches. It almost kept me from buying it. Now? I've learned through experience to control the throttle response much better.
As Joe said, if you're a fan of mechanical linkage throttles (or just really used to it), you'll hate drive-by-wire for quite a while until you get used to it.SOLD: 2002 Trans Am WS.6 - Black on Black - 6 Speed

My '04 Grand Prix is my first car with drive-by-wire. It is odd and it takes some getting used to.
In my Camaro, I could get the auto to downshift by pushing the throttle about 1/2 way down and could effectively control when the car downshifted.
In the Grand Prix I touch the throttle slightly and the RPM's jump by 1,000 like the car has downshifted, when it actually hasn't, and then they come back down to where they were before. It makes it tough if you're trying to drive efficiently. You have to second guess the computer. There are also times when I've pushed down slightly and the RPM's actually drop ever so slightly.
I've been wondering if a re-programed PCM will help out at all. That's something I think I'll look into.
As far as I can figure, the drive-by-wire system doesn't improve efficiency or throttle response. It does allow the engineers to more closely integrate features such as cruise control, remote start, and onstar, to engine operation. It may even reduce production costs.Joe K.
