  • Paint ? to anyone with an 08 and up GM product...

I recently repaired and refinished an 08 Chevrolet HHR. I found the paint code, which is located on the bottom left of the option decal(Service Parts Identification). Apparantely this car was sprayed with a water-bourne color coat and urethane clear coat.

So I was wondering if GM sprayed all 2008s with waterbourne paint?

GM started using water based paints years ago.

That is probably true but this is the first time I have seen it printed on the spid decal...(I have been in the autobody business for 8 years) I was just wondering if anyone else has seen it on there spid.

Does your spid say anything about water-bourne?

Yup. Don't know about current paint process...but, my '88 Formula was made in Van Nuys with their, at the time, new water-bourne base coat. The top coat started flaking off the base coat after 2 years.

Interesting article...When you say the topcoat was flaking off the basecoat, do you mean the color was flaking off the primer, or the clear was flaking off the color? The reason I ask is because the article says they used a water-based enamel. Typically enamel(not sure about water based though) was sprayed as a single stage paint with no clearcoat. Also the spid would usually say "enamel" on them if they were sprayed with such. My 92 and a friends 92 both say bccc (base coat clear coat), as if they were sprayed with a urethane 2 stage system, which would make that article somewhat misleading.

I forgot to mention that the delamination problem was not contained to just the f-body. I have seen it on many GM cars and trucks. Black and white delaminate the most but I have seen metallic colors with the problem.

My friends old '89 Beretta had the issue with paint coming off in sheets. His car was black and I used to tell him it looked like a cow because it came off in big spots, leaving just the primer underneath.

It actually looked very similar to this:

I've seen the paint coming off in sheets like that, but on my formula the clear coat was flaking off. leaving the base coat with a dull rough finish.

The Pontiac Trans Sport I have now is doing the same thing, but it's paint is much older (14 years) than the Formula's (2 years) was when it started failing.

sorry about the quality of the photo, best I could do right now, using old photos, scanned.
