I rolled up in the driveway this eve in the commuter van, my wife came out in the garage and walked up to me ing.......
our 11 year old golden, Shelby... has been coughing some lately, so she took her to the vet as a precaution... Shelby has cancer... tumors on her lungs and one near her heart.
We have an appt. at the Hope Center next Tues to see how bad it is what, if any, are our options... which the vet frankly said..."this looks real bad".
Shelby has shown no signs what so ever of being in pain, sick, nothing. She's been active, she's been chasing her ball when I play with them in the back yard, in fact, she runs it down and brings it back for more than the two younger golden males.. she's not lost weight..nothing.
With the exception of my son being killed in April 4 years ago, every single bad thing thats happened to me in my life has happened right before and around Christmas......everything. Last year, my wifes father had his first heart attack on Christmas eve day......... in 99, my Mom died right before Christmas....the list is long, other pets, etc... I wont go into it... I just dont care about holidays anymore... I don't... all I care about the health and well being of my animals... thats the greatest gift of happiness i can get.
Shelby is very very special to me. She was my wifes first transport when she started with http://www.grreat.org in golden retriever rescue. She fell in love with Shelby and called me one day and asked if I would meet her at our vet to meet shelby.....she was taking her there to get a check over before going to a foster home and being put up for adoption.
I arrived and my wife opened the back hatch of the Envoy where Shelby was..... Shelby saw me..and fell down on her side and raised her leg up as if to block a blow..... she'd obviously been mistreated by a man ... her age was guessed at 6 to 7 years old...picked up as a stray in our county...
Not only did I win this girl over, but she and I have become so bonded that Keona gets jealous beside herself... and when Im home, Shelby is with me all the time, she ditches my wife....
At night, she gets up on the bed and sleeps tucked up beside me....... she became daddy's girl all the way.
I am going to prepare for the worst, but pray for the best, thats all you can do...... it's not the first time down this path for us, nor will it be the last, for we have always had a house full of dogs and a wolfdog, and to us, they are our children...
slip a little pray in for my girl yall...she's the sweetest dog I have ever been blessed with, a true heart of gold... strong, takes up for herself...holds her own, yet gentle and loving like no other...
This truly rips into my heart ........ I'm going to deal with it the best I can, for you can't let the rest of the pack down......
Shelby is one hell of a retriever, the way she carries herself and the respect she gets from the male goldens and the wolfdog shows it....
Going to be spending a lot of time with her....... a lot. and praying.
