  • Spring Rim Repaint

    Hey guys,

The factory rims to my '96 Firebird were getting quite ratty so I thought I'd take an opportunity to repaint them, the faces mainly.

I used Duplicolor wheel coating. I've had very good luck with the stuff on aluminum and steel, so I thought I'd give them another shot.

    Before:

    After:

A close up of the edge detail. I left the oem silver around the rim for the time being to set it off. Not perfect but it'll do!

The inside 1"-2" is the graphite as well. In a week I will take and use a black on the remainder of the inside if needed.

Wow! Looks great! I was debating on doing that, I'm just afraid that it will come out horrible...I don't really have any painting experience so I was afraid on taking on a project like that to start

The last two are in progress. I'm going to have them remounted (carefully) Saturday. Hopefully be able to get the rest of the car as clean, enough for photos.

Looks good! I hope you scuffed the old paint surface with scothbrite or something first otherwise it may peel.

The whole thing got a thorough 400 rubdown. We'll see how it holds up.

                  rim paint

Theres a company ALSA corp. that makes a chrome paint. 90 somthing percent reflective. I seen a pick of a rim done, looked nice. Nice work on yours. The also have black chrome. Im thinking about doing my whole car w/ it.

The wheels and the car look sweet! Did you use a clearcoat? or is it one stage?
That grey color would look awesome with some tire smoke!

There is about 4 thin coats of color and 1 coat of clear. I didn't want it to be overpoweringly glossy, more of a cast look. However I wanted to have some clear coat protection.

As far as tire smoke, a V6 automatic with those tires, you just launch. Stickshift I probably could light them up.
