  • Just drove the 2010 Camaro SS

And wow did it exceed my expectations. My buddy got a really good deal on it, so he decided to scoop it up. It's a 6 speed, but he doesn't know how to drive a standard transmission. I've been teaching him and as a thank you, he lets me drive it.

    The good-

This thing is gorgeous! The clutch pedal is as light as my Honda's, and it engages more smoothly than anything I've driven before. The clutch engagement is absolutely flawless. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of what the suspension has to offer, but the little bit that I did see was impressive. If there was any body roll whatsoever, I didn't feel it. Everything felt nice and rigid. Not at all like my Trans Am. The brakes were very solid and brought the car to a halt in a hurry. Again, exponentially better than my car. This was my first time ever driving anything with an LSX and I now understand what all the hype is about. It has plenty of grunt down low, but it really starts to pin you to the seat when it hits the mid RPM range. There is certainly no lack of power here. It would have been nice if the car was a few hundred pounds lighter, but even at almost 4,000lbs the car feels nimble. The seats were comfortable and the interior caught me off guard. It's easy to see GM spent some time here, rather than using the traditional Fisher Price type parts so commonly seen in their cars.

    The bad-
Not much to say here. The door unlock button/ switch is in an awkward location (below the radio), so that took some time to find. The stereo itself leaves a lot to be desired. It could have been far more powerful, but no complaints. It still sounds good and gets pretty loud. I just expected more. The only thing I would want to change on this car, personally, is the shift knob. It's far too bulky. It's almost like holding the stock of a rifle. It would probably fit Shaq's hand quite nicely, but at 5'8" with average sized mitts, I wasn't a fan.

All in all, it turned me right around. I wasn't a fan of the new Camaro by any stretch of the imagination, but to say I'm not impressed by it would be an outright lie. I'll try to get some pictures up in the coming days.
Red 95 Trans Am: M6, Moroso CAI, Magnaflow, Spohn sway bars, back to life as of 2/15/10!!!
    SOLD- Kinda miss it
94 Del Sol VTEC: 27 city/ 33 highway, knee deep in slowness
    SOLD- Good riddance!
2006 Ford Fusion: 2.3, 5 speed, could run 15lbs of boost with a 150 shot and it'd still be slow

    Nice write up...

Car and Driver just ranked it 10th out of a 10 car shootout. But it was going up against cars that cost 3 to 4 times more...

Definitely worth a look for the money...

the 6 speed has more hp rating than the auto... because of fuel management.. yet the 0-60 times are the same......i was told.. go figure. LOL

        they're both 6speeds

I love my camaro though, it's fantastic. The fuel management only changes the EPA rating by 1 MPG when comparing LS3 vs L99.

I do agree about the unlock/lock button. And to unlock the door when the car is still on, you have to pull the handle twice and you can't lock the door if the door is open, So if i want to unlock my car from in my house and leave the keys in the house, grab something from the car and then want to lock it using the switch, it just unlocks itself again. I'm sure i just have to change settings in the user options, just haven't done it yet.

The car feels like it just wants to keep pulling in all gears and I just love the head turning cruising around the streets.

I haven't sat in one yet, but the exterior looks sweet. They need to lighten them up about 500 pounds and then you'll have a real rocket..

As for the locks, my GTO is similar as you can't lock the car with the door open and it doesn't have an unlock button inside the car. You have to pull up on the lock buttons to get them to unlock... Not a great design, but I've gotten used to it..

I test drove an SS with a stick shift. Pulled nice but the car did feel a bit heavy.

I've seen a few on the road now....you're lucky you've had the chance to take it for a spin. They're still hard to find around here.

I've been reading the comparisons between the new Mustang and Camaro. I'm undecided which way I'll go the next time I'm in the market for a car. They both seem excellent in their own ways. Style wise though, the Camaro is the looker and for now it's got the edge in power and performance numbers. I'm curious to see how Ford does when the up the ante' in the engine department, but they get a lot done given the HP deficit. It really seems like a toss up based on personal preference.

They look fun and probably are but the price tag is still a little steep, imho.

Yeah, I like my 2010 - Ride is better then the 67, power is better then the 67, stereo is better then the 67, and looks ALMOST as good as the 67.

I'm for the Z28...assuming it gets made.

Latest info. said it will...but it changes monthly. We'll see...depends on how well the new 400 hp (Coyote) Mustang sells. If it's a hit, GM might be forced to make it.
